Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

Went to school with a boy who had Roux as a middle name, he was Dutch and his surname also ended in X. So it's a Dutch/French name to me and I wouldn't use it without having that heritage.

I really like roo as a nickname though and think it could work for any names beginning with R

I don't believe that a PP knows two French children called Roux since according to official statistics it's not been used as a first name since 1900. And don't call the kid Rue either, it mean street.

ourflagmeansdeath · 06/04/2023 11:27

I honestly really like it! I love both Rue and Roux and I know the meanings a little sad but I still think it is a really pretty name. I know a girl who called her dog Roux. 😊

WorkOfTheDevil · 06/04/2023 00:07

Bloody love it! ❤️

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/04/2023 13:47

Call her Ruth and use Ru as a nickname? At least then she has a real name...

piefacedClique · 05/04/2023 13:44

I have a box Roux. We love it. No one has ever taken the piss.

oh no, User McBunch o' Numbers is here to discount other people's opinions!

Thank you Bellatrix!

I nearly responded to that snark (in an un-literate way, showing my terrible lack of vocabulary) but then couldn't be arsed.

Mousymat · 05/04/2023 13:24

I’m a Ruth (which means compassion) and get called Rue by a few friends. I love it

Except, a lot of other people on this thread share UMcB's opinion on this one. Are you discounting theirs?Grin

sausagelastrange · 05/04/2023 12:28

How about Ruby, shortened to Ru?

Or Rousseau?

I thought of sauce sorry 😂

Lovelyring · 05/04/2023 12:10

I'm afraid I hate it and do immediately think of white sauce. I think it's best kept as a nickname.

Is it particularly the x that attracts you? There are plenty of names with x's.

MrBenFan · 05/04/2023 11:01

Rue is French for street afaik. So that might or might not be a consideration 🤔

slowsundays · 05/04/2023 10:45

Rue is a better spelling but reminds me of the drug addict from Euphoria and the little girl that died on The Hunger Games.

Roux is a sauce. Please don't do Roux.

Spelt Rue I think it is beautiful (and don't associate it with the regret meaning). Have loved it since the first Hunger Games.

It will be associated with "regret" by anyone who is literate and has a decent vocabulary.

People, you are naming an actual person, not a goldfish. Please have some common sense.

As someone upthread has mentioned, there was a Roo in Home and Away back in the day. Her real name was Ruth?

TallulahBetty · 05/04/2023 10:11

LOL. Just LOL

WeeOrcadian · 05/04/2023 10:09

It sounds more like a nickname. Please don't.

SiobhanSharpe · 05/04/2023 10:06

Please don't. It's an awful thing to saddle a child with. You're basically calling her a ginger-haired bloke.
As for Roubaix -- it's a city in northern France, part of the Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing conurbation. Very industrial and not at all a pretty area. Am a little 😕at French people using it as a name for a child but I suppose there are crackpots everywhere.

liveforsummer · 05/04/2023 10:03

Do you actually know anyone called Ruby? I can’t think of any adults I know with the name and I’m a teacher of nearly 20 years and can only remember teaching 2 in all that time. There also aren’t any among all my kids peer groups.

I think we have 3 in the primary school I work in with around 500 dc. 2 happen to be in the same year group so there are 7 years including the nursery with none. Dd2 doesn't know any Rubys. Dd1 has one friend aged 14. I know one adult Ruby who is in her 60's and I've moved around - I know a lot of people 😆

liveforsummer · 05/04/2023 09:58

Roux is terrible sorry - base for Mac and cheese 😅. And she's definitely rue the day you named her Rue. Fwiw I get the nickname Roo sometimes. My name is Ruth though which is also shit and wouldn't recommend. Ruby is lovely. Not overly popular but fairly classic so spans generations therefore you will come across others - not necessarily a bad thing imo. It's popular because it's a lovely name

Roux is a French surname.
You could always use it as the surname.

rattlinbog · 05/04/2023 09:47

Rumer?
Nickname Roo?

Seaside1972 · 05/04/2023 07:55

Rudy is unisex…

ShippingNews · 04/04/2023 21:46

Oh dear, you know that a roux is a white sauce ? Don't do it.

Clearly the OP is ignorant of this. Otherwise she would realise what a terrible name it is to foist on an innocent child.

schnubbins · 05/04/2023 06:52

What about Rula ? There was an actress called Rula Lenska once upon a time.
