starfish4517 - Which ones do you consider timeless and which do you consider dated? Not for any particular reason, I'm just interested. Smile

Mumped · 07/04/2023 07:00

Grandads in our family are Matthew (Matt), Charlie, Kevin, Sean.

I really want Kevin to come back into fashion. I reckon it’ll be a hipster choice of the future 🤣

I love Roy but also met such a cute little Percy last week. I like that too.

Is that a euphemism you slipped in there? 😆

Men i in their 80s and above that I know:
Thomas (Tom)
Robert (Bob)
Michael
James (Jim)
Bruce
Alan
Graham
John
William (Bill)
Derek
Norman
Leonard (Len)
Edward (Eddie/Ted)
Gordon

I think most of the old Stanleys/Wilfreds/Ernests/ Archies have passed on now, and they are the ones back in fashion it seems.

@starfish4517 Some "grandad" names are timeless and cross-generational - I'd say these are names like George, Edward, Thomas, William, James.

Others are currently considered rather dated and may or may not make a comeback - names like Walter, Bernard, Kenneth, Leonard.

It just depends on the name. I expect it's the same in your country too? Not particularly a British thing.

Interesting, you are right, there is just a difference in which names fall in which category. Some of them from your outdated list would fall in my timeless list and vice versa Grin

This thread is irritating. It's clear the OP meant names of poster grandads not newly made ones.
And where I live most granddads are absolutely not 45. That would make them 6-8 years older than the women becoming FTMs 😲

A genuine question from a non-British.

Why do names of new granddads (born in the 60s) are so "nah"?

DS has one of these, based on the translation of my FIL's name, which in our language is absolutely timeless, classic and cross-generational, and only by reading MN I realised I must have saddened him with something terribly outdated (he's the only one in his school indeed Confused)

Funny thread

Think there's a gap between acceptable grand parents names so all the grandads I know are

Mark
Gary
Nigel
John
Paul
Dave
Adrian
Derrick

Grand mums are

Sarah
Karen
Jackie
Alison
Susan
Sally
Pauline
Heather

I think great or great grand parents names far more popular now
