Eva-Maria

We are thinking about Eva-Maria for our baby girl. WDYT?

What would you imagine the parents of an Eva-Maria to be like and what kinds of associations do you have with the name?

We want to call her by both names, is it better to use Eva-Maria, Evamaria or Eva Maria?

I'll post the other names on our list later.

Ave Maria was the first thing I thought of and I’m not Catholic or even religious myself.

How would you pronounce Eva, Eeva or Ayva?

RideACockHorseToSunburyCross · 04/04/2023 23:33

I'd immediately don a habit and channel my best whoopi

Soapyspuds · 04/04/2023 22:15

I’d struggle not to sing the name

x2

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/04/2023 21:38

I technically quite like it but in reality its too close to Ave Maria and also people will only use the Eva bit as she gets older and there are zillions of those. Anna Maria might be better. Never a hyphen, unless you are French. Running them together is naff.

Hobbesmanc · 04/04/2023 21:10

Eve Marie Saint was a huge post war Hollywood star. She's still with us. One of the last Golden age movie goddesses. She'll be 100 next year. So it's a name with class. I prefer Marie to Maria personally.

fairycupcakes · 04/04/2023 21:06

Much like other PPs I automatically thought Ave Maria so a Catholic association. It’s a pretty name and if you love it go for it! She’s your baby. I’d only suggest to drop the hyphen. Her first name can still be Eva Maria and she can still be called as such but there’s not a need for the hyphen I don’t think x

HotSince82 · 04/04/2023 20:48

I like it.

But then I love names steeped in Catholicism. DH had to stop me from using Mercedes, spoilsport

If you don't want the Catholic association then I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

WunWun · 04/04/2023 20:46

I agree that it sounds very Catholic and people would presume you were. Ave Maria is the first thing that came to my mind too. I doubt most kids her age would have ever heard the words Ave Maria though so very unlikely to torture her with it. Unless you are very Catholic I suppose!

According to forebears.io there is one individual in the whole of the South American continent (Brasil) with this forename!

🙄

Oh you sure showed me...

It's very similar to the name of a child I know from a S. American family. She has a sister with another similar name. There are other double barrelled names at my dcs' school which include Marie/Mary (as it's a Catholic school), but the parents of children from Spanish speaking or Italian speaking families tend choose Maria (I imagine, to reflect their language).

I do hope that's a satisfactory explanation for you dear

TenThousandSpoons · 04/04/2023 20:42

Ave Maria

I would assume you’re very religious.

Eva with Maria as middle name would be fine though as would just be called Eva 99% of the time.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2023 20:40

Eva Peron, is my first thought

Ichosetheredpill · 04/04/2023 20:39

MrsBunnyEars · 04/04/2023 14:17

I’d assume very Catholic, possibly European. I like Evamaria from the options!

This!

Snugglemonkey · 04/04/2023 20:36

I would think parents would be young. Catholic. Maybe travellers.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/04/2023 19:24

It's okay, think it's nice but just not my taste. The two names on their own are lovely. You could probably call her by her full name as I know an Ana Maria who never gets shortened.

miniaturepixieonacid · 04/04/2023 19:24

Yeah, I think the Ave Maria jokes would drive her mad.

It's pretty though. If you wanted to actually call her Eva and Maria then I would go with Eva-Maria. If just Eva with Maria as a mn then I'd go with Eva Maria. I don't think it works to run them right together as Evamaria.

I think of the American actress, and the song by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions ('She looks like Eve Marie Saint in On the Waterfront. She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance').

I was about to say Eva-Marie Saint, but had forgotten the Lloyd Cole name check.

CallieQ · 04/04/2023 18:55

Sounds too religious

megletthesecond · 04/04/2023 18:55

She'll have Ave Maria sang to her constantly. I'd avoid it.

Talipesmum · 04/04/2023 18:54

Sounds very Catholic, like Ave Maria.

YouSoundLovely · 04/04/2023 18:54

DesertLioness · 04/04/2023 18:50

It’s very German, not at all S. American

Yes! I think the daughter of a famous 80s German pop star is called this.

I prefer two words (definitely not run into one), no hyphen.

Very Catholic. Nothing else springs to mind, really.
