What about Noelle?

jasminesunflower · 03/04/2023 15:30

We love Isabelle and Isabella. Either with no nickname at all or with Bella (for Isabella).

Now many people have told us they are very common. We also don't really care for Izzy or Iz or Isa but think they are avoidable if we offer Bella as an alternative. Or maybe Belle, we don't mind this at all.

Now we stumbled across Noelle. Do you like it better? It is less popular for sure. And we could nickname her Ellie which was on our list anyway.

Thoughts?

The options:

  • Isabella
  • Isabella "Bella"
  • Isabelle
  • Isabelle "Belle"
  • Noelle
  • Noelle "Ellie"
  • something else from our list

I knew a Brazilian woman called Noelle (pronounced No-ellie) and I always loved it.

HappyMe6 · 04/04/2023 21:45

Noelle is lovely

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/04/2023 21:43

I don’t really. Possibly because it makes me think of Noel Edmunds and his lovely jumpers but also I think like a lot of French names it’s massacred by many English accents.

Isabella is a better bet, overused though it is. You have to be alright with Izzie though, Bella may or may not stick.

Something like Estella, Adela, Fenella might be betta

Landndialamrhf · 04/04/2023 21:05

I’m surprised by the comments. There was a Disney movie called Noelle a couple of years ago, I’d probably assume she was born in November or december, and I think it’s lovely in that case. If she’s born at any other time I don’t think it works.
what about lyla, Lilith, Laila, Evelyn,
Gabrielle, clarabelle nn clara or belle, Joelle, Josélyne, Adele

TenThousandSpoons · 04/04/2023 20:32

My first thought was Teenage Dirtbag too. (That’s where the “She rings my bell” reference is from.)

I like it, I think.

gohomeroger1 · 04/04/2023 20:28

Noelle was one of my faves but as DD was born in July I felt I couldn't. If she was born in December I probably would have

LysHastighed · 04/04/2023 20:27

Noelle would seem a similar vintage to Denise,Janet, Jackie, Debbie. So perhaps not quite ready to come back.
Noelie seems a bit more current for some reason. Probably because it’s French and pretentious

FayCarew · 04/04/2023 20:22

@ourflagmeansdeath , but the name means Christmas.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/04/2023 19:43

I quite like Noelle, think it's pretty and quite underused. Really don't think it matters whether she's born at Christmas or not, in fact think it's better if she isn't. Otherwise people will think you only named her that because of her birthday.

I really dislike the nickname Ellie though - I don't think Noelle needs a nickname at all!!

And I love Isabelle nickname Belle/a the most out of all your choices. If the popularity really bothers you, then Noelle on its own is great.

FayCarew · 04/04/2023 11:01

Awful, sorry. No L.

user1492757084 · 04/04/2023 09:21

Noelle is lovely, as are Isabelle and Isabella.

Other Ellie names ...
Lorelle
Brielle
Denelle
Claudelle
Ellinor
Elizabeth
Adelle
and many more

Cotswoldmama · 04/04/2023 09:19

My first thought is teenage dirtbag, then Christmas but then noone her age would know the song. I really like the name Ellie though.

emmathedilemma · 04/04/2023 08:52

I've now got an earworm of The First Noel so it's a solid no from me I'm afraid.

RobertsRadio · 04/04/2023 01:54

I just think "Crossroads".

Jadviga · 04/04/2023 01:47

I love Noelle or Noel, it's a relative's name (born in July, it doesn't have to be a Christmas name at all !)

If you're looking for -elle names I also like Axelle and Raphaëlle.

beachpearl · 04/04/2023 01:36

Ellie is common because it's a lovely name .Noelle is nice but if you still want Ellie as nickname that's a good name. You don't have to use it as a nickname and give her a different real name. But if you do I love Elodie. It's classy and can use Ellie as name x x

DiscoBeat · 04/04/2023 01:35

She rings my bell?
?

DiscoBeat · 04/04/2023 01:34

I think Noelle is lovely. I think Isabella is lovely too but it's so well used now.

DomesticShortHair · 04/04/2023 01:27

Is anybody else in the family called Noelle, or would she be the first?

midsomermurderess · 04/04/2023 00:46

No one says that Natalie has to be a Christmas baby.

Lullabies2Paralyze · 03/04/2023 23:56

I knew a Noelle. She was lovely. Don’t think she had a Christmas birthday, she wasn’t English so maybe the name was more common in her country

CC4712 · 03/04/2023 23:56

I know a 15yr old Noelle who lives abroad (not Ireland). She isn't born near Christmas, and I really like the name. Same as not all Aprils are born in April nor all Summers in Summer! No nn, just Noelle.

Izelle is another option if you like Isabelle

ShowsLikeThese · 03/04/2023 23:54

Noelle is fab

miniaturepixieonacid · 03/04/2023 23:50

I like Noelle and Isabelle - not shortened to Ellie or Belle. Probably prefer Isabelle but might choose Noelle over it as it's much more uncommon and fresh.

Like pps suggestion of Christabel. There's also Amabelle, Rosabelle, Joelle or Mirabelle?
