I know a Mala which is pronounced Marla. Might help you avoid the Maria issue. I think Mala is a Burmese name, her family are from Myanmar. I like it.

Alternatively, Mara or Mila?

In Ireland a lot of people say 'marla' or 'morla' for playdough... think there's a plasticine brand called marla as well? But obviously if you're not in Ireland it probably doesn't matter! Mara is nice either?

I prefer Marli. assuming it is for a girl.
I think of Marla Maples.

For a boy I like Marlo.

Never heard of it (or don't remember - I actually have watched a league of their own many moons ago). I like it.

To pp who said Marlo is better - surely that is a boys name though?

It generally sounds quite Madame Cyn / aging barmaid, but also makes me think of the woman trump left Ivana for.

Marina or Maria are both nice

I’m not wearing my glasses and misread it as Maria at first glance. I think you might find that happens a lot.

I’m not a huge fan. Martha or even Marnie have a similar sound and are nicer imho.

Makes me think of Marla Hooch from the film A League Of Their Own. Brilliant character but as she's initially rejected for being too ugly, maybe not a name you'd want for a baby?
