I love the name Cove, but does it suit a girl or a boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's the name of a particularly horrific (and unfortunately true) film/documentary made about the treatment of dolphins by certain humans.

No.

AlwaysLatte · 29/03/2023 13:09

It's a bay's name.

Name of a geographical feature. Not a name for a human.
Why this obsession on MN for weird names? Your child has to live with the 'unique' name.

I agree. If you're giving your child a "unique " name then also have a sensible middle name so they could use that when older.

Mercurial123 · 29/03/2023 13:07

It sounds made up.

HowardKirksConscience · 29/03/2023 12:59

Cove is an area of Farnborough, Hampshire. I can’t see anyone wanting to name their child Cove after visiting it.

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 12:57

‘Sly cove’ or ‘awkward cove’ is very Jeeves & Wooster.

Are you getting mixed up with Slithy Toves? All mimsy were the borogoves.

Squid3 · 29/03/2023 12:54

Please don't do that to your kid they deserve an actual name.

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 12:54

At Moongazyhare
No more suited as the name of a person than ‘colander’

In a future life I might call my triplets Colander, Pomander and Salamander.

It isn't a name at all - for either sex.

Oh god, for one awful minute I thought "cove" is yet another new sex act or position you kids invented and I've missed out on.

Twoinapod · 29/03/2023 12:40

At a push I’d say girl, but it’s also a derogatory description of a promiscuous woman. Not a name I’d want to be given

PurpleAirGuitar · 29/03/2023 12:23

I've never heard this used as a name before. I think I would probably assume boy, but be prepared to be surprised.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 29/03/2023 12:19

Clove would come with Garlic as a ready made nickname.

FetlocksBlowing · 29/03/2023 12:17

Even Clove would be better.

Cove makes me think of the old, uncensored Enid Blyton stories, with a shifty looking cove hanging around up to no good!

GlassBunion · 29/03/2023 12:02

Peninsula sounds better for a girl.

Headland would suit a boy.

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 11:55

HealthyFats · 29/03/2023 10:17

A brother for Cliff 😭

Please don’t call your poor baby Cove.

Or Beach. Or Sandy. Or Stony.

How about Clover for a girl or Clovis for a boy

2bazookas · 29/03/2023 11:51

"Cove" is English slang for man, a bit like "bloke" or "chap" or US "guy". It's not quite derogatory but has a patronising overtone of lower status. Its not a good name for any child IMO.

I'm guessing that you are mispronouncing and mis-spelling the Irish name
Caoimhe (girls name, sounds like kweeva). Don't lumber your baby with a name you can't spell or pronounce, it just sounds pretentious.

Bigpinktrain · 29/03/2023 11:48

It’s out there that’s for sure.
I think it’s masculine.
I live in East London where you are very likely to come across a Xylo, Rhubarb, Cloudy (I’ve not made those names up!)

Lullabies2Paralyze · 29/03/2023 11:46

It feels very surfery to me….so masculine (yes I know females surf but it was predominantly a male sport in terms of popularity and competitions etc).

I like it but I think it’s definitely a location dependent name. It would be a bit weird calling someone cove who lives miles from the sea/beach IMO.

🙄 Ignore all the sarcastic posters whose kids probably have top 10 names OP.

I'd say Cove is a girls name.
I actually really love Cova but it's kind of unusable now after Covid.

Ah, the classic snide (and incorrect) attempt at a put down.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 29/03/2023 11:42

Dodgy name. Sexual undertones. He sailed his boat into her cove!

Honestly think people posting things like this are doing it just to have a secret giggle about maybe having encouraged someone to name their child something ridiculous.

Or just given their children actual names.
