So the hubby and I absolutely love the name Atlas for a boy, but is it too out there? Will people think it’s weird? Should that matter? Thoughts please!

It's quite a good name

I makes me think of the book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.

this is the thing that puts me off it the most

whatalovelydayy · 28/03/2023 19:53

It's in the very popular Colleen Hoover books 'It ends with us' and 'It starts with us'

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 28/03/2023 19:52

I actually know two little boys called Atlas so I think it must be becoming trendy.

EmilyGilmoresSass · 28/03/2023 19:49

Are you gonna have another called Globe? Or Roadmap?

HanSB · 28/03/2023 15:40

I don't like it, similar to if I heard a boy called Wolf, it feels like the parents were trying hard to be trendy.

Both of these names were Gladiators (tv not historical)

FayCarew · 28/03/2023 19:40

Satnav?

CurlewKate · 28/03/2023 17:51

No.

Ventingtura · 28/03/2023 17:35

No, that would not be a kind thing to do to your child.

I know an Atlas (and 2 x Atticus!) . It's ok but i think Ocean is nicer if you like that sort of thing (my DS has a "normal" name)

Viviennemary · 28/03/2023 17:28

It's awful.

Sadiegirl87 · 28/03/2023 17:26

Personally I wouldn't use it for my child however if you really like it you should use it, it'll become normal for him. If you're concerned what about using it as a middle name

WhisperingAutistic · 28/03/2023 17:15

Encyclopedia?

UseOfWeapons · 28/03/2023 17:15

No.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 28/03/2023 17:14

What if he grows up to be thin and weedy?

ferretface · 28/03/2023 17:14

We were going to call one of our cats Atlas (he ended up as Nevis)

I think it's too knowing for a baby name personally and kid might get bullied.

category12 · 28/03/2023 17:12

Use it for a pet instead: it's far too much to live up to as a child or grown man, unless he turns out like Hafthor Bjornnson.

ComeTheFuckOnBridgett · 28/03/2023 16:55

I would be one of the people to think it's weird.

Pointeless · 28/03/2023 16:53

I think I like it, in a "that's quite cool but I'd never use it" way. Don't use it OP, it's not worth the reactions he'll have to deal with his whole life. x

Harebrain · 28/03/2023 16:51

No.

Novella12 · 28/03/2023 16:51

I adore it. It is a wonderful name. Go for it!

MikeLitoriss · 28/03/2023 16:50

I don't think it's as unusual as your thinking it is OP, i know of two babies born this year with the name and there is one in my son's nursery.

Fairylight102 · 28/03/2023 16:49

Have you read the book “It ends with us”
by Colleen Hoover? One of the main characters is called Atlas.
