So the hubby and I absolutely love the name Atlas for a boy, but is it too out there? Will people think it’s weird? Should that matter? Thoughts please!

I actually really like it!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 11/06/2023 22:18

No. It is not.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 10/06/2023 19:26

It was the name of one of the babies in the first baby group I went to and I live in rural Scotland. So it’s not as out there as once was as it grows in popularity.

It’s one of those names which sound interesting but to actually think of calling out the name in a park or introducing my child makes me cringe a little. Maybe you’d be fine with it.

There’s the Greek connection and also the geographical one. I don’t think either are terrible. I think often bullying solely because of a name is exaggerated here. It’s not a bad name but it’s not one I’d want to use.

Should that matter? Yes

EarthSight · 10/06/2023 18:04

In middle class circles, maybe. Same goes for names like Felix.

Elspethelf · 30/03/2023 08:44

I love it. I also gave my son an uncommon name and have no regrets

mumto2teenagers · 29/03/2023 17:34

I really like it.

ourflagmeansdeath · 29/03/2023 17:30

Previous posters have probably said but it reminds me of the character from It Ends with us and a lot of teen moms are naming their sons that. It is also part of Greek Mythology.

That being said I do still quite like it 😁I don't know, it just has a nice ring!

rwalker · 29/03/2023 16:40

I doubt a strapping 20 year old would thank you for that name

it’s too Jeremy Kyle for me

Keeween · 29/03/2023 16:36

With the weight of the world on his shoulders? No.

mumonherphone · 29/03/2023 16:35

I think Atticus is a lot better

TheaBrandt · 28/03/2023 14:57

That’s a lot for a lad to live up to! What if he is puny? Would be quite cruel

This was my first thought too tbh!

I do know one in RL (age 3). I think it's becoming more popular.

Klunt · 29/03/2023 10:20

I know a couple of Atlas’s

I like it

Unemployednobody · 29/03/2023 10:16

What about the name Map or Travel Guide?

ididntwanttodoit · 29/03/2023 10:15

I thought you preferred Cove?

The only Atlas I know of is a great dane dog. I think it would be a hard name to pull off if the child had a bad sense of direction. Agreeing with an earlier post Atticus is better.

Atlas is bad enough but Atticus is downright awful.

It is out there and quite try hard IMO

CatchHimDerry · 28/03/2023 20:24

I love it and would use it, but I like quite “out there” names

Butterwicky · 28/03/2023 20:20

It's pretentious.

defi · 28/03/2023 20:09

I like it

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 28/03/2023 20:04

I quite like it as a word and I can see the appeal as a name, I feel the same about Tuesday before a girl, but I think actually using either of them would be cringey.

RealMcKoy · 28/03/2023 19:57

There is a married Jamaican artiste couple who have a Youtube family vlog ( that I follow) who have named one of their sons "Atlas". And all for it being a name with only two syllables , it just doesn't trip off the tongue with a lack of pretension to me outside of signifying an actual atlas or Greek Mythology.
So if those of a "left field" profession can't finesse the name for their child, I wouldn't do it if you aren't more than two steps from being connected to the "Primrose Hill Set" of 90s -early 2000s infamy ( "Wolf" being the name of one of the offspring of Bobby Gillespie and Katy England).

Tescoland · 28/03/2023 19:56

I personally wouldn’t use it. Very silly name.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/03/2023 19:54

No. It's awful.

Atticus is a similar sounding and far better choice.
