Help! Costa or Freddie?

Uvayema · 28/03/2023 02:33

Less than 3 weeks left and we don't have a name for baby boy 2. We like Frederick (Freddie), but also considering Constantine (Costa) due to family tradition on my side (Spanish heritage). DS is called Nico. What are your thoughts? Is Freddie too popular? Is Costa a valid option?

Felipe Constantine
Wilfred Constantine
Costa Frederick
Nico and Costa sound good for brothers.
Nico and Felipe too.

Oh forgot to say Freddie was very popular a few years ago. Our boy is 13 months old. At baby groups of which we attend many, have only met one other Freddie. Leo, Theo/Theodore, Arthur, Teddy, Arlo. Don't think Freddie is anywhere near the top 20 anymore xx

flowergirl2020 · 31/03/2023 08:09

We have a Frederick - who we call Freddie / Baby Fred. He's the most delightful fun loving, mischievous and affectionate little boy. Have a few names. Our preference was Arthur but he just didn't look like an Arthur and this name suited him much more. All the best in your last few weeks xxxx

@ScentOfAMemory I agree, poster should ask for feedback. We all love what we love, but we perceive it uniquely so of course it's sensible to do a straw poll to check, is our perception of a name of the metre? or, do we love it for the reasons other people like it?

DipperandMabel · 31/03/2023 07:05

Constantine is lovely - I think of John Constantine, does everybody else? I wouldn’t plan a nickname, just call him the full name. A nickname naturally comes you don’t plan it necessarily.

Looking at the general feedback

rather than what you and your partner love

You’ll be spending the next 18 years on mumsnet at this rate OP

Why are you persisting in bullying this particular OP who is asking for opinions on names, on the names board?
Have a read through of the other threads asking the same. You could fill your bullying boots all day by spreading the personal attacks more widely instead of focussing on this particular poster.

THisbackwithavengeance · 31/03/2023 06:56

I love the name Constantine. Costa as a nn is ok as long as you're prepared for lifelong jokes and ragging about coffee. So I would go with Con.

Freddie is too common now and boring.

What about Francis but the the nn Franco?

Ffs someone with Spanish heritage isn’t going to call their child Franco 🙈

COPPER3 · 31/03/2023 06:50

Love Emilio and Francis...
Great choices..

Thank you for your opinions. Looking at the general feedback I'm thinking Emilio or Francis (Frankie) could be good options

Oh - Francis and Victor are both great

Francis is popular right now, but not overdone, and Victor is certainly used. Both definitely back and not at all old fashioned.

Emilio I think will get mistaken for Emilia / Emily a lot just because they are so popular. This might be annoying.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/03/2023 00:03

I love Nico

I like Constantine, but I think Costa is just too associated with coffee

Freddie is overdone and dull

Anything else?

ourflagmeansdeath · 29/03/2023 17:51

I think Freddie.

Natsku · 29/03/2023 14:34

I have a Konstantin (so almost same name, just tin instead of tine), his usual nickname is Konsta but I also call him Tintin. But its a name that leads to so many possible nicknames so Costa and its coffee association need not be the only one.

DaisyWaldron · 29/03/2023 14:33

Constantine goes better with Nico. You can call him Costa as a family shortening, and let him choose a different one if he wants - he can always go for Stan if he wants something very English sounding, but there are loads of possible nicknames.

Snugglemonkey · 29/03/2023 14:29

Uvayema · 28/03/2023 06:07

Thanks for your messages, so true about Costa coffee! How about Constan as a nickname for Constantine?
Other options we had were Francis (Frank/Frankie) and Victor (we've been told both are too old-fashioned) and Emilio (we've been told too foreign)

I love Frankie, see nothing wrong with Victor and know a 2 year old Emilio. Too foreign? Ridiculous!

Freixene · 29/03/2023 14:24

Santino?

Sadiegirl87 · 29/03/2023 13:54

I think Freddie is a better option, yes it's probably a bit more common but most nice names are and due to do many new names being chosen even if it's popular there will be less children overall called it. I'd just go with the name you feel you can see yourself saying for the rest of your life

COPPER3 · 29/03/2023 13:36

I love Constantine!
He will be shortened to Con (probably when he reaches school age).

Love Consa, Con, Tino, Constan...for short..

Nice to hear different names.
Freddie is so popular.

TitterYeeNot · 29/03/2023 12:30

Both names are lovely, could you do “Connie” for Constantine?

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 29/03/2023 12:28

Uvayema · 28/03/2023 08:40

Thank you all! I do like Constantine but it's def too long not to have a nickname. Stan is quite difficult to pronounce in Spanish.
Do you know many Freddies in your schools/nurseries?

It is literally the most popular baby boy name in the baby classes I've been to. And not just one per class either, there are usually two. Anything but Freddie.

ididntwanttodoit · 29/03/2023 10:14

@DrHousecuredme I agree - nicknames come later. Constantine is a lovely name. Child might end up as Cos, Costa (regardless of the coffee connection), Tina ... or he might have an altogether different nn determined by his pals! Some of my lads' friend were Shug, Chrissy, Jonesy, Tubby, Smurf, Cheesy, Titch, Mac. I never even found out their original names!!!

Yoyooo · 29/03/2023 09:49

Nico and Emilio sound nice.

Nico and Javier

Nico and Diego

Nico and Gabriel
