For what? It weird as a forename for a human.

It's a very traditional Cornish name, so maybe you should read up about it instead of being rude.

Maireas · 26/02/2024 10:32

I have taught several boys called Josiah.
Several girls called Tabitha. A couple of Maggies.
The only unique student name I came across was a girl called Isis.

Have you never seen 4 weddings and a funeral??

St John… I’m hoping there called John and that’s just a joke…

No, that’s a real name although it’s very old-fashioned and very rare these days. It is pronounced ‘sinjun’. See St. John Rivers in Jane Eyre for example.

How do you pronounce it? My best guess would be similar to Briar?

Yes that's how she said it, exactly.
I've just googled it and it is one of the Scilly Isles apparently.
This was in the 80s before the trend of unique names so all the more unusual at the time when we were all called Sarah, Emma or Louise.

I went to school with a Bryher (girl). I've never met another one. She was forever having to spell it.
