How do you pronounce Antonia?

  • An-ton-yuh (with the second syllable having a short ‘o’ sound)
  • An-Tony-uh
  • An-toh-niya

Or some other way?

Do you like it?

My mum’s name and she’s Spanish.

KirstenBlest · 23/03/2023 12:36

Ann-tone-ya

Cinnamon23 · 23/03/2023 12:01

An-toe-nee-ah.

I know one in her early 30s and she’s only ever gone by Toni.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 23/03/2023 11:52

The second pronunciation and I wanted to use the name for my daughter but other half wasn't keen 😩

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 23/03/2023 11:38

*never heard first or third

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 23/03/2023 11:38

The second.

Never heard the first or second pronunciations. Don't like them either.

saveforthat · 23/03/2023 10:01

Second pronunciation. I love it and haven't heard it for years.

Enko · 23/03/2023 09:56

Anne tone ee uh.

Lovely name. Are you quite posh? I think of it as a posh one.

This made me chuckle as a girl who was a bully in my neighbourhood growing up was called Antonia. She had a single mother and they struggled financially. She had very little and even as a child I knew why she was so angry and nasty. She was jealous if everything and so destroyed it all.

They were so, so far from posh though.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/03/2023 21:54

an-TOE-nee-uh

I like it but I don’t like Toni as a short form.. it probably will get shortened though, so you should try and impose something you like. I wouldn’t worry about it sounding too posh these days with Isabellas and Theodoras two a penny

ladygindiva · 22/03/2023 21:52

Third one. Lovely name, I know one , she goes by Toni which I also like.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/03/2023 21:50

Love it. As far as I know it's usually pronounced "An- TOE -knee -ah" or occasionally "An- TONE -ya" - both with the emphasis on the second syllable in the UK, although I like the European "An -toe -KNEE- ah" (with the emphasis on the third syllable) even better.

So elegant and classy looking/sounding to me, I'm not sure why it's relatively underused- and has it has lovely nn options too (other than more dated Toni), such as Anya, Nina or Nia.

ourflagmeansdeath · 22/03/2023 18:19

Second one, think it's a beautiful name. The actress who plays Ginny in Ginny&Georgia is called Antonia and goes by Toni which I also quite like. 😊

RuthW · 22/03/2023 15:42

Second one

Pemba · 22/03/2023 11:13

The second one, that is the English language pronunciation I thought?

Have heard the 3rd one (An-toh-NIYA) in an opera, they were singing in French.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/03/2023 11:07
