Alice or Eilidh?

We are expecting our second baby at the end of May. Don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl but we are set on Leo for a boy.

We already have a daughter called Lara.

What do you think of Alice or Eilidh? Hallie was also a contender but DH has gone off it. I like names that won’t be shortened and aren’t too cutesie or frilly.

I think Eilidh id a nice name and am Scottish so have no issues with pronunciation. I do know a wee girl with an English mum who is an Ailie which is nice too. I think Alice is a bit insipid.

MotherofPearl · 21/03/2023 20:53

Alice, definitely. It's a beautiful name, and is a better match with Lara.

Lcb123 · 21/03/2023 20:52

Alice is a lovely name. I wouldn’t know how to pronounce Eilidh

Schmutter · 21/03/2023 20:51

I love Eilidh. But the idea of people saying Ellie, Hayley or eye-lid is off-putting!

Bratnews · 21/03/2023 20:51

Eilidh so much nicer than Alice, Alice is a bit dull. Eilidh is nothing like Ellie

Jaymar · 21/03/2023 20:50

@AmandaMirandaPanda No way! That’s absolutely brilliant! I’m Scottish and was seeing a Karl for a bit in my early 20’s. People thought I had a girlfriend as I can only pronounce it ‘Carol’.

I like both but I do have a friend called Eilidh who works in a customer facing role and is always being called Eye-Lid by customers who haven’t come across the name before 😁

😂 oh I’m sorry, but that was so funny!

A friend is called Eilidh and her now-husband is American. When they first became a couple, he was mostly communicating with his parents by email and just occasionally calling them, because of the time difference. Later on, he discovered that the parents had thought for months that their son had two girlfriends, "Eyelid" and "Hayley".

@WildGeece DH says Ailish reminds him of Hamish. This is what I am up against. If only I could choose the name by myself.

@PauliesWalnuts eyelid, that’s hilarious 😂

@jays that description of an Eilidh really made me laugh! I know what you mean about Alice, I like that it’s feminine but has a bit of strength about it too. I felt the same about Lara.

I would go with Alice simply because Eilidh is just Ellie slightly different. Like Kaylie is just Kelly slightly different.

I would like Alice even if it's top 1 name and I usually don't like popular names. That said, I do like Eilidh.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 21/03/2023 20:33

Alice every time.

jays · 21/03/2023 20:31

Alice. All day long, it’s a brilliant name. I feel like when you’re called Alice you can be anyone you want when you grow up, I know an Alice and she’s just a cracking girl, I somehow find the name Eilidh reminds me of a girl who’s always cold, needs a cardigan and annoys everyone at primary school because no one knows how to spell her name and somehow turns into Emily Bishop from Coronation Street when she ages, I don’t know why! Just my daft opinion! Lara is beautiful btw. Just beautiful, I love it!

WildGeece · 21/03/2023 20:29

What about Ailish? It's the Gaelic version of Alice.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/03/2023 20:29

Alice
