The same initials? Opinions

Hi, I posted here a few days back about naming by 2 week old baby Lucy, there was mostly positive feedback and I've pretty much settled on the name. My name is Louise and someone pointed out that we'd have the same initials. This isn't something id even thought about and a few of my friends share initials with their children so didn't feel it was a big deal. What are your thoughts on having the same initials? Also do you think Louise and Lucy are too similar? Ive always liked the name so wasn't phased but now I'm questioning everything before we get her name registered!

I actively sought to avoid it since I knew a family years ago where all four children had the same initial and they were forever opening each other's letters. That said, it's a lovely name and a name is for life, not just for childhood.

My mum, DD1, my aunt and I all have the same initials. Never been a problem.

alotoftutus · 17/03/2023 18:21

I have the same initials as one of my children, doesn't bother me in the slightest and I don't think it matters one but.

ancientgran · 17/03/2023 18:18

My DH and son have same initials. Has caused upset in the past when the wrong person opened post. Other than that I can't say it is a problem. A different middle initial would have helped.

bellalou1234 · 17/03/2023 18:15

I have a lucy shes 24 lovely timeless name

Sadiegirl87 · 17/03/2023 17:49

Thanks as most people have said we're moving towards paperless information so hoping it won't be a big issue, she will be Miss and I'll be Mrs and we're having different initials for middle names. Feeling much better about the initials and our names being similar now

It's ok, but I had my parents opening my mail as a teenager.
That it had Miss K L Blest not Mr K C Blest or Mrs K S Blest made no difference.
I didn't like that. Also DF would bin it if was something he thought wasn't important and DM would tell everyone what I'd received.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 17/03/2023 15:18

Having similar first names isn’t going to be much of an issue as you’ll be known as mum to your children.

I have the same initials as my dad - I’m sure my parents opened my post a few times and excused it by saying they mistook it for my dad’s. So from child pov it can be annoying if your parents are nosey but not really an issue.

romdowa · 17/03/2023 14:43

I had the same initials as my brother and now I have the same initials as my husband. It's rarely been an issue.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 17/03/2023 14:41

Just make sure their middle initial is different and use it.

So if you are Ms L M Smith, they can be Ms L K Smith.

Justlovedogs · 17/03/2023 14:37

Pre-marriage, I shared initials with my late DM. Never though about until I read this post!
Post-marriage, I have the same initials as DH and late DFIL. Whatever Grin

jannier · 17/03/2023 13:25

I have the same initials as my child not a problem as children but now they get their own mail I'm forever opening it by mistake or vice versa....or we both leave it for the other

Sadiegirl87 · 17/03/2023 13:22

Thank you, just feeling a bit anxious about committing to a name which is very different from my DS a few years ago. If she asks I'll tell her I named her after me lol

Lucy is a beautiful name OP. Don’t let small things like this away you

Sadiegirl87 · 17/03/2023 13:02

The similarity of our names isn't even something I had thought about until now but it is something I'm worried about but at the same time I can't find any other names for her that I feel suit and we like! Friends and family think im being mad and the names are different enough to use Lucy so I might just go with it now but thanks for the honesty

We have neighbours called Peter and Pauline. Their children are Parker, Paddy, Penny and Piper. Does not seem to cause them problems!

Reminds me of my dads cousin

Julie and Jamie, with their children Jordan, Jack and Jodie

Soubriquet · 17/03/2023 12:56

Me and my dd have the same initials MJS.

I deliberately did it. I wanted her to have an M name like me

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/03/2023 12:55

It really does matter.

BridieConvert · 17/03/2023 12:54

It's really not a big deal at all. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to be honest!
I don't share an initial with my mum but our names do rhyme and that can be very annoying if we're both in the same room!

SummaLuvin · 17/03/2023 10:29

For me, all else being equal I would avoid matching initials, but in a situation where you are struggling to find another name then I would relax that criteria. However, unlike PP, I would find Lucy and Louise too similar, they are both two syllable names with the first being pronounced identically.

greenkitten2 · 17/03/2023 08:20

It's absolutely fine! I think even for siblings it's not really an issue. (Although I do know brothers who's names both begin with an X, and that seems stranger).

Nimbostratus100 · 17/03/2023 07:48

and many sons have traditionally been named after their fathers, and they seem to manage too - I think just having the same initial will be fine, and shame to change a name you are happy with

Nimbostratus100 · 17/03/2023 07:47

My friend grew up with the same name as her step mother. The same exact name, and have had for decades, they always managed to work out whose post was whose

GoodVibesHere · 17/03/2023 07:45

Lucy is a lovely name so pretty and timeless. It's not a name you hear so often now. I also love Katy it has a similar vibe.

Same initials is not a problem at all, barely any letters are sent by post now, my teenagers never receive post except on their birthday which is obvious it's for them.
