Love Edie for a little girl, but concerned people would pronounce it differently.

How would you pronounce Edie?

I'm aunt to an Edie and can confirm that the Eddie thing is a real and constant frustration to her, both written and spoken.

We have an Edie in the extended family and she too gets called Ed or Eddie often.

It's probably because Edit, Edinburgh or just Ed are so popular as names/words.

tealandteal · 25/11/2023 12:54

Honestly if you like it go for it. I have an extremely boring, plain, common, traditional name and still get mispronouncing or spelling it strangely. Edie is a lovely name, one in my DS’s class and all of the children are able to pronounce it correctly.

FayCarew · 25/11/2023 12:50

@WelshWondergirl , Evi (Evvy) is a normal european name - like Evie in the UK. I think most forms of Eve start with an Ev sound not Eev.

I can appreciate that she might get called Eddie IRL, and that's why these threads are of value.

It's annoying when you get the stock 'My name is Phoebe and no one has ever called me Feebs/spelled my name Pheobe' replies. It happens.

It makes no sense to call Edie 'Eddy' but lots of posters are 'fumming', looking for a new dinning table/filling cabinet, have jumpers that are piling etc. I know I sometimes tap a key twice by accident.

Maybe because there's no name that's Evvie?

There are some places where Evie is commonly pronounced as ev-vie (as in Evelyn and evangeline) - I've heard this pronunciation a lot in America and Ireland.

There's no confusion with the name Evie, is there, so why is there with Edie?

@peaceinourtime , I agree. I pp that maybe it was Ea like in Eamonn. If I heard it I'd spell it like in Edie Sedgewick.

peaceinourtime · 24/11/2023 15:40

They are two different names, Edie and Eddie which apart from having some things in common letters, the ee sound are not the same. One thing that surprises me on this thread is Eadie which would confuse people how to pronounce it; it looks stupid and made up.

wherethewildtbingsgo · 23/11/2023 21:26

You could spell it Eadie if you're worried about pronounciation

Samzzz · 23/11/2023 17:46

E-Dee

Crunchymum · 23/11/2023 14:46

It's one of those names the more you say it / look at it / mull over the possibly pronunciations the more confusing it becomes.

Its E-D

Call her Edith and use Edie as her nickname. People seem to find Edith easier than Edie.

Musntapplecrumble · 23/11/2023 02:00

E.D.

Oh but they do, all the time. I have an Edie and she hates her name because of the idiots people mispronouncing her name

Another parent of an Edie here (now 20) and yes, it's Eddie (written and / or pronounced) with mind-numbing frequency. Mainly from under 50s who've never come across the name.

Pronunciation threads have become very weird recently, with at least one resident disruptor (I suspect under a couple of aliases) insistent on their pronunciations and refusing to listen to careful explanations.

I don't anticipate you will have a problem with people calling Edie, Eddie, OP.

yes, the same person over and over.

Oh, sorry. I'm genuinely surprised at this.

I really don't think people will confuse it with Eddie...

I much prefer the Eadie spelling - and I'd know how to pronounce it.

SpringIntoChaos · 14/03/2023 21:01

I have an Eadie in my class (with the Ea spelling). Always pronounced 'ee-di' (long ee short di)

Beautiful name 😍

derbylass81 · 14/03/2023 20:54

I'd never heard this name until about 12-18months ago....now it seems to be everywhere.

Well, Edie Sedgwick, I'd heard of her, but that's it. Hadn't given much thought to the name.

People round here don't mistake it for Eddie (that I know of) but they do mistake it for Evie a lot, or query how to spell it, or ask what it's short for.

HPsauce01 · 14/03/2023 20:25

My daughter is called Edie - the only time she gets called Eddie is when they call her name at the doctors!!

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 19:50

I wouldn't have known that Eadie was a surname. I'd have thought maybe Eadie was Ay not Ee because of names like Eamonn.
I don't think you'd have much trouble with Edie either but not everyone will get it right. Just like a lot of names.

Eadie is a surname.

Most native English speakers will know that Edie is pronounced ee-dee. It's not a big deal.

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:51

I'd read Eadie as Adey

Ad-ey? Wow. I'd say Ead-ee

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 14:42

There is no logical rule that Ed becomes Ee by adding -ie to me knowledge, or is there? I'm curious.
