Can anyone think of a 6 letter boys name, that can be shortened, and works well in English as well as Dutch.
Harmen was suggested, but shortened to Harm doesn't work for me in English!
Any ideas?

Currently, popular Dutch boys’ names include Liam, Luca, Lucas. Unless you/they go for older names, I think you’ll find they aren’t that different from the UK.

sparkysalmon · 04/05/2023 07:00

Yes, Peer, as in pear🍐!!!!

Well, the parents are Dutch, and living in the Netherlands, so I guess they know what they are doing!

There's a Dutch actor Peer Mascini so, it's clearly not unheard of, it's just unusual to English ears

In addition to Noah, the rest of the Top 5 Dutch boy names include Liam, Luca, Lucas, and Mees.

Don't worry OP. Names are like fashions, They change every year.

Peer must be a local name. He can always call himself Peter internationally as an adult.

suburbophobe · 04/05/2023 04:02

Peer means Pear (as in the fruit) in Dutch!

Yep.

Congratulations! Lovely he's born safe and well.

Hopelessacademic · 04/05/2023 03:34

Really?? Peer means Pear (as in the fruit) in Dutch!

sparkysalmon · 03/05/2023 19:16

It sounds like Purr- rine ( rhyme with lime)

Nickname is Peer...

Which I think of as sounding like Pier...

It's going to be tricky, I can't roll my R's

Is it Perijn or Pepijn?

coxesorangepippin · 03/05/2023 18:56

Caspar is great

You can't call him Gerrit

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/05/2023 18:54

Congratulations. No idea why they would think it works in English, presume it is pronounced as Pe-rine

Sandysandwich · 03/05/2023 18:30

I'm liking Willem so far...I think that's a good contender

I don’t know if willem works in English and Dutch as the first letter wouldn’t be pronounced the same in both

@goldenfoliage

Both parents are Dutch, and live in the Netherlands, as do all of their Dutch extended family. They have teased that it is a typical but possibly slightly old fashioned Dutch name, but that it will also work nicely in English ( and therefore I can pronounce 🤣)

It's just a bit of fun, wondering what the name will be. I'm excited about it, that's all.

And, absolutely I will be enthusiastic whatever the name will be, and as I will be this child's childminder when his mum returns to work, as I am already for his brother it's just a bit of fun.

If it's "Lame" for you, feel free not to participate

I’d be genuinely surprised if a Dutch parent used Willem. It’s pretty old-fashioned and was last popular in the 80s so it’s a real ‘dad’ name there.
