Twin brother for Alex

Hello everyone, I'm pregnant with mo/di twin boys. I already started thinking about baby names. I've fallen in love with the name Alex, just that not Alexander and husband is on board. However we struggle to find another name that we like as much. I love Felix, but I'm not sure about Alex and Felix. Isn't it too matchy? Husband just thinks of cats when I mention Felix lol. Another option is Alex and Luca, which I think flows quite well. The last name we came up with is Ben. However I've always liked Benjamin more, and shortening it to Ben just because Alex is a short name feels wrong. What do you think about these combos? I'm still searching for simple boy names with european feel and would love to hear your suggestions. Thank you. 🙂

I have to say, I don’t think you can call one boy the long version of his name and the other only gets the shortened version. The one with the short version is going to feel shortchanged because he’s got fewer options.

I think it would be a bit odd to do Alex and Benjamin, I think they'd both have to be the long version or neither of them!

StampOnTheGround · 05/03/2023 07:50

Completely agree with long names not being needed! Just Alex and Ben would be absolutely fine and better than the long names.

I do love Luca though so either Luca or Ben

I have longstanding childhood friends who are Alex and Ben, although Ben is Benedict. I also know an Alex and Benoit, known as Ben
. It seems like Alex and Ben is a popular combo!

Alternatively:
Alex and John
Alex and James
Alex and Patrick

How about Frederick?

Amdone123 · 05/03/2023 07:46

I love Alex. Alex and Luca is lovely, and I agree with your dh regarding Felix.
I love Alex and Benjamin - I don't think the short / long thing is an issue. ( reminded me of when I met twins, Jane and Elizabeth - I thought it was a beautiful combination).
Alex and Benedict
Alex and Dominic
Alex and Sebastian
Alex and Tristan
Alex and Michael

daisypond · 05/03/2023 07:43

Not Felix. Benjamin is nice. Benedict is also good. Luca is a bit naff unless you are Italian. How about Luke or Lucas? Marcus?

twins23 · 05/03/2023 07:24

I forgot to mention that in our home country Alex is used way more than Alexander. Only as a male name though (female variant is almost always Alexandra). So in my eyes it was always a full stand-alone name.

@AmyandPhilipfan Alexander is just not really for me. I've tried to love it, but I can't. I've thought of Alexei because of it's european connection but I'm worried that it may be too unique with our other options. I want the twins to have names with similar popularity so there's no jealously over the other's. Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with the name being unisex because we're giving him a proper male middle name. Times have changed and when the twins grow up there will be female Jameses running around. But that might just be me. 😁

Try flipping the names around and make sure they work that way too, so

Ben and Alex
Jack and Alex
Etc

I think Alex and Benjamin are perfect together. You could always combat the short/long name combo by giving Alex a longer middle name and Benjamin something short, but I don't even think you need to. Congrats!

merrymelodies · 05/03/2023 02:14

Nothing flaky. It's a strong name (Alexander) and needs a solid counterpart

Alex and Luca sound good together. Though I prefer Luka spelling.

Crumpledstilstkin · 05/03/2023 02:00

If you went for Alec instead it's a full name and no concerns over the X sound.

I would go for Alexander and Benjamin even if you always call him Alex. I know a teenage Alex and he hates the fact he hasn't got the long version of the name. Hates that it's a unisex name. He's the reason I would always recommend that people put the full version of a name on a birth certificate. Even if it's never used I think it gives the person more options.
