Does Ace as a nickname for Alastair work?

Really like the name Alastair, not keen on Al or Aly. A friend has suggested Ace, does that work or is it too random? Thank you

I'm always slightly puzzled by threads like this. Nicknames evolve naturally over time to something that the child likes and it suits them. This Mumsnet fashion for choosing a nickname before the child is even born is strange and a bit pointless really. Alistair is a nice name, if you like it, use it but drop the forced terrible by the way nickname until he is old enough to make his own choices.

Is your surname Rimmer?

Alex or Alec could be used. Or Les, I believe old fashioned names are now in fashion…

I would have said they were more Alexander rather than Alistair.
And I'd also think Les was Leslie.

But no Op Ace isn't a very nice nickname

Thought that was a short version of Alexander (Alec-sand-er).

Alastair is related to Alexander - it is the Gaelic version.

I did not know that! Sandy makes sense in that case.

For me personally i dont think you can plan nicknames, and i dont get why people do - unless its Benjamin to Ben.. nicknames shouldnt be planned in my opinion but form organically, my sons one has zero relation to his actual name but it somehow happened and lots of people call him that nickname now. Just pick a name you like and one will come along..

Agree with this. Nicknames evolve.
Dh's nickname when I met him was nothing remotely related to his actual name.

My DS has that name but spelt the Scottish way on his birth certificate. He is Ally, always been called it, I love the name ally for a boy.

I now feel old because I think of Ace Rimmer….

What a guy. I would.

Men called Sandy are always pervy creeps.

I work with a young Sandy & he's lovely not a pervy creep at all.

OP my family nickname is traditionally a shortened form of a completely different name to my own but my mum hates the shortened version of my actual name so would never use that even though everyone outside of family calls me it

YukoandHiro · 05/03/2023 19:03

It means asexual now

TwinsAndTiramisu · 05/03/2023 19:00

Nope.

How have you even come to the conclusion that Ace is any form of abbreviation for Alistair?

grumpycow1 · 05/03/2023 18:59

I don’t get it, sorry. Either stick with Alastair and prepare that he may shorten it to Al. Or just call him Ace on the birth cert if you want him to be called Ace!

RichPetunia · 05/03/2023 18:57

As in Ace Ventura? Regardless, the answer is a big fat no because what if he never lives up to his name? Smile

Peachops · 05/03/2023 18:53

What about Spade?😂

JoeMaplin · 05/03/2023 18:50

The Ace I know is non binary, as has already been mentioned. No issues with that, but personally I really don’t like it!

Figgygal · 05/03/2023 18:46

The two are in no way related sorry

Heatherbell1978 · 05/03/2023 18:44

My brother is Alistair and we just call him AlistairGrin

fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 18:43

Nah

OnaBegonia · 05/03/2023 18:42

No, it's a different word/name.
Why do so many posters choose a name then immediately cast about for a random NN that 99% of the time has fuck all to do with the name??

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 05/03/2023 18:41

Ace is short for "the asexual community", so no.

HuggingtheHRT · 05/03/2023 18:40

It’s a bit wanky. Or a cartoon character.

Absolutely this.

Alastair is a lovely name. Just leave it as it is.

TrashyPanda · 05/03/2023 18:38

Alistair is a great name.

also love Al/Ally/Ali as shortenings

Ace has zero to do with Alistair and it comes across as pretty naff.

nicknames evolve - they aren’t predetermined.

LadyJ2023 · 05/03/2023 02:10

Nooooooooo

Pubesofsoberness · 05/03/2023 01:31

He doesn't need a shortening or a nn. Plenty of children go through life being called by their full names. 2 of mine don't like having their names shortened so no one does it
