Elijah

What comes to mind when you hear this name?

Eli is a completely unrelated name. It’s a full name in its own right, with an important religious history.

Yes Eli is a name in its own right, but also very commonly used as a nickname for Elijah.

It's a very religious name. There are lots of names beginning with El currently popular. It's long, and peple tend to shorten it to Eli, which I don't like.

Can you please name a few starting with El?

Love it

daisypond · 26/02/2023 20:06

I think Elijah is very religious -either Jewish or nonconformist Christian.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/02/2023 17:57

I like it. Eli (Eee - lie), the inevitable diminutive, is nice too.

Eli is a completely unrelated name. It’s a full name in its own right, with an important religious history.

It’s a nice name, but I’d also assume from a religious background

Something similar to it that doesn't sound religious

Yes like it

LadyKenya · 26/02/2023 19:49

Lovely name.

Willowtre1 · 26/02/2023 19:41

Biblical. A bit too evangelical

BCBird · 26/02/2023 19:30

I only taught one Elijah. He was a loveable rogue

RaininSummer · 26/02/2023 19:29

I would think it was an ok name especially abbreviated to Eli. I would also assume a highly religious family.

Friedcabbage · 26/02/2023 19:28

How do people pronounce it? I’ve always said “Elijuh” but a friend with a grandson with the name says “Elizuh” as in how Zsa zsa Gabor’s z would have been pronounced

Rellywobble · 26/02/2023 19:22

Am not a fan .

Twotreesgreen · 26/02/2023 19:21

I have loved this name for as long as I can remember and now I have one! He’s completely gorgeous, funny and kind and he loves his name. He often goes by Eli too. We aren’t religious - this did slightly concern me but I think it’s mainstream enough, I also don’t mind if people assume I am.

Amadeaa · 26/02/2023 19:21

Bible…nice sound but too much religious connection for me

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/02/2023 19:20

It is a great name but I think in many Western contexts it would read as specifically biblical. How about Idris? Some scholars think his name is a variation on Ilyas / Elias / Elijah.

Emmmie · 26/02/2023 19:20

Prophet Elijah is Prophet Ilyas in Islamic tradition/Arabic language.

Sort of like Mary - Maryam
Jesus - Isa
Etc.

You can name your child what ever you want. Elijah is a very nice name.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 26/02/2023 19:16

It’s nice. Very biblical so I’d assume you were religious.

Nice name that goes across different faiths and those of no faith.
Well known enough without ever being overly popular.
Not particularly of any era or decade.

Good analysis 🧐

@Pemba Elijah is Elias in the Koran. But, I want my child to have a western sounding name. I like both

I love it.

But I am a big fan of biblical names :)

Luana1 · 26/02/2023 19:12

I think of Frodo Baggins, but that's not a bad thing!
