I like it, a nice classic name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/02/2023 20:50

Just a nice boys name. It seems pretty popular

Not a fan as it sounds similar to 'a liar'

Actually it does sound a lot like eh liar

ToriLynn · 27/02/2023 19:17

Not a fan. DH wanted to use it for our DS but due to the religious connections I said a firm NO!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 27/02/2023 19:15

Love it

Roselilly36 · 27/02/2023 19:14

I like it, lovely name.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/02/2023 19:11

I know a few Elijahs, aged 3 to 17
most are Eli for short.
it’s a nice enough name, definitely popular enough now to not have a religious connotation as pp have said.

Can you please name a few starting with El?

Elliott/Eliot, Ellis, Elias, Eli, Elisha, Eliezer,
Elon, Elton, Elwood, Elgan, Elwyn ...

Ellie, Ella, Eleanor, Elsie, Elizabath, Eliza, Elena, Elodie, Eloise, Elise, Elsa, Eliana, Ellen, Elora, Eleni, Elisa...

Not all of them are popular but Ellie and Ella have been very popular for about 30 years.

Elijah means 'Yahweh is my god'.

I am choosing a boys name. Eliezer sounds good too and thank you

I really wouldn’t worry about it seeming religious, it’s definitely mainstream enough now. I found the older generation saw it as religious but my age group not so much, I doubt his age group will at all. Name fashions change! My own name and half my family have biblical names that were common in the 80’s/90’s, although no one is religious.

I completely agree with this. Biblical names, especially Old Testament boys' names, are very fashionable at the moment. The most popular boys' name in E&W is Noah and I guarantee that very few of the 4000+ families who chose it for their son in 2021 are practising Christians.

MNers rarely suggest that the choice of James, or John, or Peter, or Simon, necessarily denotes a very religious family. Those names are exactly as religious as Noah, Elijah, or Josiah, but the difference is that they crossed over into secular popularity a longer time ago.

I generally like biblical names - but this one is a bit too holy for me.
I think Eli (Ee-lie) is ugly too.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 27/02/2023 08:02

Ilya is very very much a boys' name but it is a strange choice if you have no Slavic heritage.

Reddahlias · 27/02/2023 07:55

Ilya is definitely 100% a male name!

Zamummy · 26/02/2023 23:20

What about Ilya?

I work in pharmacy, if I saw it on a prescription I'd guess female and wonder how it's pronounced... I prefer Elijah.

saltwater1985 · 27/02/2023 06:01

Loads of them around here

garlictwist · 27/02/2023 05:09

It makes me think of the bible or sleepless in Seattle. It's fine.

user1492757084 · 27/02/2023 05:04

Elijah comes from parents who practise their faith.

DramaAlpaca · 27/02/2023 01:22

If I met an Elijah I'd assume religious parents.
