What are your thoughts on Fleur for a girls name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

In theory I should like it. In reality I don’t. I think Flora is much better and more useable.

SummaLuvin · 26/02/2023 09:06

I really like it, but my sister casually said it was like Cilla Black saying 'flare', and now I have such a strong association that I couldn't possibly use it.

louderthan · 25/02/2023 23:21

Fleur is beautiful and so is Flora.

WildCherryBlossom · 25/02/2023 09:55

Flora is a prettier sound

WombatsAndGumTrees · 25/02/2023 07:05

It's a perfectly good and well known name.

FayCarew · 25/02/2023 06:51

It was first used as a name in The Forsyte Saga.

Lucienandjean · 25/02/2023 02:30

It's a pretty name but I associate it with the character in The Forsyth Saga, and I think that would put me off it.

Seaitoverthere · 25/02/2023 02:18

I like it and named a pet it but for some reason found it hard to say so gave up and she became Flo.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 25/02/2023 01:19

Very pretty name , suits an adult too .

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2023 01:15

It always makes me think of someone being sick, sorry to be so blunt.

Flora is nice though.

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/02/2023 01:13

Lovely meaning, but agree with others that I don’t think it has a nice sound when spoken (or at least not in my accent!)

pinkpanther84 · 24/02/2023 21:35

My daughter is called Fleur so I am biased, but I think it's a beautiful name. Works for a baby, child and adult

Posyapocalypse · 24/02/2023 21:32

I’m with the majority in that I don’t like how it sounds when pronounced in the UK - sounds like bleugh, urgh. I do like Flora or Florence (Florrie),

FayCarew · 24/02/2023 21:28

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 20:41

I tend to think French names lose most of their charm when said by someone who doesn't have a French accent.

Me too

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 24/02/2023 20:42

It’s the kind of name I should like and I want to but, as others have said, it sounds like ‘bleugh’ to me and seems somehow unfinished.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 20:41

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 20:40

yeah, it sounds like an exclamation of dislike for me too. like urgh and bleurgh.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/02/2023 20:39

It's lovely. I really like Fleur East.

FayCarew · 24/02/2023 20:36

I quite like it but I have a rhotic accent. I say it as Flurr not Fleugh.
Is it a name in France?

Twoinapod · 24/02/2023 19:55

I really want to like it, the meaning is lovely and said in a French accent it’s nice, but unfortunately in the UK it sounds too much like Eugh!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/02/2023 19:54

I like the name but don't like the sound!

It sounds like Bleur.

familyissues12345 · 24/02/2023 19:38

I love it. Funnily enough I had surgery earlier in the week and my nurse in recovery was called Fleur, the first thing I said to her was what a pretty name she has BlushGrin

Probably better than crying at her (like I've done after a GA in the past..)

Santasoorplooms · 24/02/2023 18:57

There aren’t many names I really don’t like…but Fleur is one of them, sorry. It sounds like vomiting, unless you have an authentic French accent to go with it.

Londonmama85 · 24/02/2023 18:55

Not sure it will sound nice in some accents..

Snoopystick · 24/02/2023 18:15

This is so funny as it was DPs favourite name but it sounds awful with his accent (north west) so much do that I had to veto it. My daughter also thinks she dodged a bullet as she doesn’t like it.
