(With Maris as a middle name rather than a part of the first name.)

Is it usable? I love the name Stella and I love the Virgin Mary.

In Ireland there are lots of schools and sports clubs called Stella Maris. I'd find it a bit of a strange name for a child. But if she was just Stella day to day I suppose it doesn't really matter.

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 11:57

It's the name of an old fashioned bed and breakfast by the seaside...

I love the Virgin Mary. Assuming this wasn't you just being facetious; how about calling her Mary?

Octopusmittens · 24/02/2023 11:57

It’s lovely, but does sound rather like it should be the name of a rare Peony.

Daisychained8 · 24/02/2023 11:54

Thank you everyone! I’m pleasantly surprised by so many people liking it! 🥰

Stella Maris is lovely in every way.

bigbluebus · 24/02/2023 08:17

I used to play for a badminton team called Stella Maris. It had links originally with the local Catholic Church (Our Lady Star of the Sea) and the linked Primary School was (at that time) called Stella Maris. I'd find it rather odd if I came across a child with that name - sorry.

LauraChant · 24/02/2023 08:02

I love the name Stella, and I’ve loved Stella Maris ever since reading An Awfully Big Adventure, where it’s the mother’s name. Please do use it, it is lovely.

Beer potato

My first thoughts, I read it like a shopping list

spottie · 24/02/2023 07:57

Yep sounds like a ferry or a potato

HoldingTheDoor · 24/02/2023 07:55

It sounds like a hotel or a cruise ship.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 07:54

Stella I think is fine as a name (despite the people saying beer).

But Stella Maris has strong P&O vibes to me.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 07:53

not trying to be horrible, but it sounds like you’re naming a ferry. Or a cruise ship.

Soggyhouse · 24/02/2023 07:52

Didn't realise the last bit of my post hadn't sent, but yeh, when I saw the title I thought beer potato. Sorry op!

Beer potato

😆
Yep, me too

Awumminnscotland · 24/02/2023 07:33

Also, I love the name Stella. To me it's a very strong sounding name.

Our DD is Stella and we love it, haven't met any others yet either. I like Stella Maris and for all the people saying "it's a bit heavy for a baby", well she won't be a baby for long!

AnotherCountryMummy · 24/02/2023 07:21

I didn't love it until I read the meaning. And now I really do!

When I think Stella I think of a dog with shaggy hair. Not sure why.

The dog in Kesuke's Kingdom is called Stella.

DesertRose64 · 24/02/2023 06:44

That made me laugh. There’s a connection at the back of my mind also but I can’t remember what it’s. I’m thinking something like the dog in Peter Pan. Was it nana? I love that.

I think the dog in Princess and the Frog is called Stella.

I really like the name Stella, it’s strong and feminine and beautiful for a baby, toddler, teen and adult.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/02/2023 06:50

I quite like Stella Splendens. Which means splendid star. But I'd never call a child it!

Sorry Op - my loved one was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we are a Catholic family, but I haven’t practiced for 50 years.

Some of my grandchildren have names that are translations of Star of the Sea in the language and culture they’re been brought up in.

PoshCoffee · 24/02/2023 06:38

I once stayed in a hotel in Spain called Stella Maris

DesertRose64 · 24/02/2023 06:36

Daisychained8 · 24/02/2023 05:49

We are Catholic and also as a family have a very strong connection to the sea (in terms of family history) so I thought it might be fitting. I also love Stella which she’d be know as day-to-day. I didn’t know it was a place either but to be honest it sounds pretty cool with the bike races 😁

My loved be is known as Stella as is anyone else I’ve come across with the name. But I always mention the Maris part of it when I’m asked what my loved ones name is because of how beautiful it is.

Star of the Sea. It’s just absolutely beautiful.
