(With Maris as a middle name rather than a part of the first name.)

Is it usable? I love the name Stella and I love the Virgin Mary.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My name is Stella and I've always loved it. My kids both tell me "You're a star, Mum" which I think is really cool. Go with it, your daughter will thank you.

CarolDunne · 24/02/2023 17:18

May be if I was a sailor as it means Star of the Sea

but if you lived in Dublin everyone would just think of dollymount beach

DogInATent · 24/02/2023 17:17

Sorry, my first thought was that it was a new blight-resistant potato variety and this was the gardening section. Or a cargo ship.

And that's before the kids figure out it's S&M.

ElizabethBest · 24/02/2023 17:14

It's a lovely name...... for a boat.

junebirthdaygirl · 24/02/2023 17:12

In lreland l associate it with nursing homes formerly run by nuns. I love Stella though..

Stella Maris..Star of the sea..name of my Dad's boat

I'm sure I've seen quite a few boats with this name.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 24/02/2023 17:00

Yes, awful and I thought of a potato too.

Viviennemary · 24/02/2023 16:39

Its awful. Sounds like a variety of potato.

Stella Maris is a just up the road from where I live, and to thousands of people would immediately make them think of the Isle of a man TT motorcycle races as it’s a famous part of the circuit.

Whether that would bother you or your child in the future is up to you. Personally I would think it’s pretty cool, but I am a massive bike fan.

Roy Moore in his commentary box at the Hairpin, talking about spectators getting excited on the first lap as riders approach Stella Maris was the first thing I thought of 😁

Daisychained8 · 24/02/2023 16:32

Yes, I think it will be a nice thing for her too - it’s a really beautiful meaning! ☺️ I’d love it if my
name meant something like this!

How about Maris Piper?

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 12:23

@ReadersD1gest no I wouldn't expect it to be something she says to everyone and anyone - but sometimes conversations about names and why you are called such a name do come up in life from time to time.

SabrinaEvolutuon · 24/02/2023 12:18

I stayed in a holiday cottage called that.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 12:12

Your second daughter could be Réalt na Mara. Same meaning as Stella Maris.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 12:12

I agree with the PP, that Mary is definitely an option. There’s a name that’s ripe for a revival.

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 12:12

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 12:09

@ReadersD1gest oh sorry do you mean the Star of the Sea bit?
Then Stella would say "If you include my middle name my name means Star of the Sea" and most people would go "Oooh that's pretty" (and maybe ask what the middle name is).

Well yes, that's what I meant. Do you really think the child's name will be so enchanting to her that she'll volunteer this spiel to every passing random?

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2023 12:09

It's a bit full on and if you had a second daughter, not sure I could think of a similar heavy duty Catholic name. I love the sound but it's very Catholic.

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 12:07

@ReadersD1gest I meant most people don't know other people's middle names.
They are usually only used on paperwork etc.
If someone (child or adult) asks "what's your name" young Stella will say "Stella".

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 24/02/2023 12:05

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 11:57

It's the name of an old fashioned bed and breakfast by the seaside...

I love the Virgin Mary. Assuming this wasn't you just being facetious; how about calling her Mary?

yes, and definitely the name of an old fashioned B&B.

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 12:02

My first thought was "that sounds like a type of apple" 🤣 but now I have learned the meaning I think it's a fantastic name.
Middle names don't get used day to day usually so most people won't ever know about the Maris part.
But your little Stella being able to tell people her name means Star of the Sea is brilliant.
Love it.

How does that square with "most people won't ever know about the Maris part"? 😂

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/02/2023 12:01

I thought it was a beer promotion, maybe alcohol free Stella.

However as a middle name it won't be seen like that so I think it is lovely.

WinterCarlisle · 24/02/2023 12:00

Love it and love the meaning of it

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/02/2023 12:00

Stella Maris was the name of the convent school in the town I grew up in! Sounds odd to me as a person's name (mainly because I didn't realise Maris was a name, IYSWIM). Stella is lovely though. Underused.
