(With Maris as a middle name rather than a part of the first name.)

Is it usable? I love the name Stella and I love the Virgin Mary.

It’s beautiful

Lovely long history

Don’t see why it’s a heavy burden

WorryingTimes · 25/02/2023 01:09

I love the name Stella, but Stella maris n Northern Ireland its the name of the hostels for homeless street drinkers

We are Catholic and also as a family have a very strong connection to the sea (in terms of family history) so I thought it might be fitting. I also love Stella which she’d be know as day-to-day. I didn’t know it was a place either but to be honest it sounds pretty cool with the bike races 😁

Then it's a perfect name.

Thisbastardcomputer · 24/02/2023 23:14

My friend lived in a bungalow called Stella Maris

Catmuffin · 24/02/2023 22:50

Lovely

thegreylady · 24/02/2023 22:46

Stella Maris
Star of the Sea
Pray for all sinners and
Pray for me.
It is a beautiful name. My RC grandfather used to sing that hymn to me in the car.

CoddledAsAMommet · 24/02/2023 22:42

I've only known it as one name, Stellamaris. Woe betide anyone who called her just 'Stella'! I think it's lovely.

Wallywobbles · 24/02/2023 22:41

I second the potato identification.

snowtrees · 24/02/2023 22:38

In our area it's the name of a school so no.

33goingon64 · 24/02/2023 22:00

What about Morwenna (Sea Wave in Cornish)?

Bideshi · 24/02/2023 20:57

It's beautiful. And I normally hate every name suggestion on here.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 24/02/2023 20:51

It’s pretty but I instantly thought ‘cruise ship’ for some reason - and I hadn’t made the ‘star of the sea’ connection…

PacificallyRequested · 24/02/2023 19:11

Stella's lovely.
Stella Maris would be a very weird thing to name a child.

purpledalmation · 24/02/2023 19:03

Sorry I thought it was a potato too. Not keen on the Maris.

evtheria · 24/02/2023 18:45

While I love the name Stella, these 2 together sound like a cruise ship name to me, sorry!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/02/2023 18:45

Stella Artois' organic sister brand

Ellmau · 24/02/2023 18:44

I like it.

It’s lovely, but does sound rather like it should be the name of a rare Peony.

I would love to be named after a rare peony 😊

I like the name.

Spanielsarepainless · 24/02/2023 18:34

It's the alternative name for the Apostleship of the Sea, the Catholic equivalent of Missions to Seafarers. I used to shout 'Stella Maris' at the end of the gangway, before a seaman would let me on board.

Stella Maris was the name of the convent school in the town I grew up in! Sounds odd to me as a person's name (mainly because I didn't realise Maris was a name, IYSWIM). Stella is lovely though. Underused.

It's the name of the old convent school in my town which has since been demolished and social housing built in its place 😊

Paturday · 24/02/2023 18:07

Never heard of it before and think it sounds lovely. No idea why ‘star of the sea’ would be a heavy name for a baby? Also she will hopefully be a grown up far longer than she’ll be a baby.

ClaraThePigeon · 24/02/2023 17:26

I don't find Stella a very attractive name and every time I hear it I want to say/scream it as Marlon Brando does here, and I haven't even seen the movie.

Go with it, your daughter will thank you.
Very strange assertion Confused

This exactly the sort of family that SHOULD use the name. I heard the hymn in my head as soon as I read thread title. And day to day Stella is pretty and just unusual enough that you won't meet a lot of others her age.
