What do you think? Prefer this spelling because we like the shortening Nico.

Neco looks horrible 😵

OP it’s a great name, not sure why it seems some PP don’t get Nico, I know 2 men called Nicolás (long a vowel sound) from South America originally, they go by Nico and 99% of the time people in UK get it right. Very occasionally you will get someone pronouncing it Nicko

TallulahBetty · 20/02/2023 09:09

Neco is also an acceptable spelling, if you prefer?

CatLoaf · 20/02/2023 09:05

I sway between loving it and thinking Nicolas/Nicholas sounds a bit too dweeby :(

Was my #1 choice for a boy (and that nickname) but husband didn't like it.

I still love that name. Shame husband didn't 😞

ArghRainAgain · 19/02/2023 01:38

@Roterosen its a popular name in Spain and pronounced Nico-las with an accent on the a. Also commonly abbreviated to Nico.

According to Google it is Greek in origin derived from God Nike.

Roterosen · 18/02/2023 23:08

I get that explaining the spelling might be a bit of a pain, but it's not like Nicolas is a wild variant

But Nicolas is French and pronounced Nicola.

I love it. I have a 2.5 year old and 3 week old and I wanted Nicholas for both😂 DH never warmed to it though. Nicolas is nice too, I like both spellings. Nikolas is another option. Nico would have been my choice of shortening too

Nooo, @Doowop1919, sorry you didn't get your wish!

I'd like to just call him Nico, but DH think it's better to have the full name.

I really like all of it, Nicolas, Nico, Nicholas, I'd go with the latter spelling I think.

SunshineCoastSurfer · 18/02/2023 14:51

@Roterosen it's pronounced "Ni-Co". (as in "knee" and "co" like "co"conut.

Roterosen · 18/02/2023 13:38

How is Nico pronounced in English? Nick-o?

plumduck · 18/02/2023 11:42

Call them Nico

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/02/2023 09:48

I like it and Nico

But I would spell it with an h if you’re in the UK, he’s the one that has to live with it - and spending his life correcting it or having endless conversations that go… but without the. What? spelt Nicolas.. is going to be a very boring element to his life

naemates · 17/02/2023 21:35

I just read your title as Nicolas plural but before that would have said I preferred that spelling 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe too much Scottish political news this week!

Haha @naemates I get it! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

LOVE this name. My son was born in Spain and this is the name I picked for him as I love how it sounds Nic-o-las (without the H). He goes by Nico with his friends/teachers.

In fairness strangers (e.g. doctors/dentist etc) do tend to pronounce it correctly as they realise the spelling is different. The odd person has said Nicholas but got it first time when corrected.

Iguanainanigloo · 17/02/2023 21:38

I think it's fine. Nice for him to have the full name on his birth certificate and to use if he wishes when older. But I'd introduce him as "Nico" if that's what you'd like him to be called, and that will become his more common identity, so shouldn't have any issues with spelling. Cute name

I don't want to shorten it to Nick @Roterosen I mean, maybe a losing battle haha, but your comment also sounds slightly bossy 🤣

CatLoaf · 17/02/2023 21:22

Haha, the one time I asked previously on MN about Nicholas (with the idea we'd ca him Nico for short), most people suggested spelling it Nicolas 😁

OP posts:
Smoothlines · 17/02/2023 15:38

I would spell it Nicholas. Nicolas is the French spelling and is pronounced differently. You can still shorten it to Nico.

Roterosen · 17/02/2023 15:06

Nicolas is the French spelling. Pronounced Nicola.

In the UK id definitely use Nicholas and shorten to Nick.

ohnoh · 17/02/2023 14:47

Love it

LightHousePanda · 17/02/2023 14:45

I like the name but sadly DH doesn't like it. I think i'd probably go with the spelling with the "h" but whatever works for you.
