What can be shortened to Annie?

Love the name Annie, and it’s a homage to family members from both sides, but would like a longer nickname so they’ve got more of a choice if they decide they don’t like Annie later in life. Any suggestions?

Any name with the An start of a name. Fun fact, my grandma's birth name is Anne but growing up she used to be called Annie which she didn't like so she goes by her middle name. So not everyone will will like being called Annie as a nickname/name.

Anya
Anna
Annabelle
Annalise

LadyEloise1 · 15/02/2023 18:15

I love Annalise too.
Annalisa is nice as is Annick.
But my choice would be
Anna, Annie Rose or Annalise.

If a Joanna ended up being Jo, or a variant, would you be happy?

Yes, definitely. For context, I also have a long name and only ever go by the nickname, but it’s a name that could be shortened to lots of things, like Elizabeth nn Lizzie. I have and probably will always use the nickname that I use now, but I like having the choice and want to give my daughter that if she decides she doesn’t like Annie. Although I suppose I could name her Annie and she could go by Anne if she prefers? Don’t know if anyone does it that way around though?

I love Annelise as a name. One of my friends whose grandmother was Russian called her daughter Anoushka in homage but she's known as Annie. Another friend has an Annabelle who is known as Annie.

Annie is a great name in itself though.

I’ve always loved the name Annie Rose from the Alfie books

Me too. So sweet. Though I don't like the name Annie. Love Anna though.

Johnnysgirl · 15/02/2023 13:27

You could use Anne? Although Annie is longer, not shorter...

Prettypennies · 15/02/2023 13:25

Itdjgsurchg · 15/02/2023 12:45

I have an Annie. I do love it but wish I had named her Annabelle and shortened it to Annie.

FloydPepper · 15/02/2023 12:44

Annekin 😀

KirstenBlest · 15/02/2023 12:36

Not Angharad, because it doesn't have an N in it. NG is a letter in it's own right.
Pick something that starts with An or Ann.
Antonia

Andrea
Annette

Yep - my mum is the one person who still calls my brother by his full name. Even my dad gave up after 40 years 😀

But You have to be prepare for her to call herself a variant you don’t choose, unless you name her Annie. I didn’t go for Samuel or Benjamin for this reason (like the shorts but not the full name)

Yes, lots of people are saying Anna. My friend is Anna and would refuse to respond to Annie because she sees it as a totally different name. You can’t guarantee the nickname Annie will stick. The friends sister incidentally is an Isabelle. Refuses to be known as Isabelle only as Izzie. Her mum wanted her to be Belle too!

but longer names could include:
Ariana
Arianwen
Annalise
Brianna
Eliana
Christiana
Angharad
rhian/Rihanna/Rhianwen/rhiannon
Bethan
Ceriann
Anastacia
Alannah
Luanne

Anne-Marie

LadyEloise1 · 15/02/2023 09:16

@canteditme
Alannah / Alanna is the Irish for darling or pet. I think it's a lovely name / meaning.

Mumsnut · 15/02/2023 09:11

Anise

Johanna (Swedish form of Joanna and a bit less dated??)

My mum is Annemarie and goes by Annie. Annie is my daughters middle name.

Annemarie elegant, appealing. Love it.
I know a Mary-Anne, which is also a little unusual and yet so familiar, I just love it.

Whatdayisitalexa · 15/02/2023 08:58

Anoushka is lovely and goes with Isabella I think

Whatdayisitalexa · 15/02/2023 08:57

I think if you really like Annie it would be probably better to choose it or a name with it in the first part of the formal name otherwise another nickname may get used naturally. Obviously if you only use Annie and don't disclose the longer name it would be less likely, but it kind of negates the other name iyswim?
