Name after a Scottish Loch

What is everyone’s opinions on Katrine as a name.

It is a very beautiful loch in Scotland (DH is Scottish, I’m English). Sir Walter Scott used it to write his lady of the lake poem. But it is also a ‘proper’ name in its own right, which I know is important for mners.

It is pronounced Catrin (which is the Welsh version of the name). Would you pronounce Katrine this way.

Do you like it, love it or loath it?

Being Danish Katrine is a well known name. For me I would say KaTri NUh. However I am aware that this is unlikely in English speaking countries so I would follow the lead of the person. And say like they introduce themselves l.

It's a beautiful name. People get past their ideas. Like you often see violent being used here when Violet is suggested yet Violet is fairly popular so it doesn't put people off.

I did not think Latrine

BlueLabel · 14/02/2023 21:02

I'd pronounce it as Katrin, but then I'm familiar with Loch Katrine. It's a lovely name.

SunonmyFace · 14/02/2023 20:59

..I also know a Garry as in Loch too, also Scottish, it is a thing

SunonmyFace · 14/02/2023 20:58

I know a Katrine, named for Loch Katrine, sister to Kerry ( as in County), names reflecting the their Scottish / Irish parentage ( and in their 20’s now!)
never queried the pronunciation as it is Katrine, like the Loch …

RicardaPrycke · 14/02/2023 20:53

I also thought "Latrine", I'm afraid.

I thought you were going to ask for suggestions, and was going to say Vanessa (Ness), which is a lovely name.

How does Anna rhyme with banana?

because in my accent the last two syllables of banana are nah-nuh and Anna is ah-nuh, it might be different in yours of course.

The ch in loch isn’t hard like lock. I don’t know what the word for it is but it’s almost from the throat.

That link is great but if I say it like that is sounds like I am taking the piss out of the accent.

I don't have a hard ck in lock. I do find accent fascinating.

NannyR · 14/02/2023 19:55

I think most people who are mentioning latrine are using it as an example of how they might pronounce Katrine having come across it for the first time, not that they think she would be teased or bullied for having a name that sounds like latrine. It's not a word that many children would be familiar with at all.

MapleLeafMe · 14/02/2023 19:46

Beautiful, and a known name in Scotland. It does not rhyme with latrine, despite a previous poster’s comment

SirChenjins · 14/02/2023 19:34

It’s hard to describe how you say the ch in loch - it’s a bit like keeping your throat open when when you say the ch like you’re about to gargle, as opposed to closing it to pronounce an ock sound.

Agreed, Lou rhymes with poo, Doug rhymes with thug, Anna rhymes with Banana…and what?

How does Anna rhyme with banana?

I know someone who used Maree.

How is Loch pronounced then?

@TheOriginalEmu sorry didn't tag, I'm really interested, I can hear the difference

WarningToTheCurious · 14/02/2023 18:36

Glad it wasn’t Muick.

Katrine is lovely, and I also know a Ceitidh and an Affric.

Justputitdown · 14/02/2023 18:11

My first thought was latrine. Sorry!

Aaron95 · 14/02/2023 13:15

Katrine and latrine do not rhyme. The first is pronounced "kat-rin" the other the same as it would be in England.

They do if you read them. I would say it rhyming with Latrine but I'd only do that once. I think the meaning behind the name is lovely.

Ducksurprise · 14/02/2023 18:08

TheOriginalEmu · 12/02/2023 17:17

Loch isn’t pronounced lock.

How is Loch pronounced then?

TitoMojito · 14/02/2023 18:03

I read it as "Kat-rin" like the village, Catrine. But I'd honestly question why you'd name your child after Catrine, as a Scottish person 😂 good old Coturn.

Also Catherine is a family name in my family and they are all called Cath-reen.

SirChenjins · 14/02/2023 17:54

To be fair, the pronunciation of those names are generally known, so unless you're familiar with Loch Katrine and connect the 2 then it's more likely you'll pronounce it Ka-treen. Doubtful there'll be teasing of the latrine variety though.

TheOriginalEmu · 14/02/2023 17:24

FurAndFeathers · 14/02/2023 13:46

I find this repeated point a bit silly and doubt it would happen irl.

Katrine (with the correct pronunciation ) is not the same as Latrine

even if it were, so what?
if someone introduces them self as ‘ Katrin’ almost no one is going to say ‘ooh like Latrine’ in the same way that plenty of women are call Katrina/Catriona and no one thinks “ooh like latrine with an a”

latrine isn’t even a word in common use.

it all seems a bit primary school to me (except most primary schoolers are less likely to make that tenuous connection!)

Agreed, Lou rhymes with poo, Doug rhymes with thug, Anna rhymes with Banana…and what?

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/02/2023 16:54

I really like Catrin, but she’d have to live with people mispronouncing it as Katreen - which is what it looks like and is less attractive.

So personally I’d go for Catrin/Katrin, if the re-spelling doesn’t bother you. Or otherwise she’s just going to have to deal with it. 😁 it’s a nice name.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/02/2023 14:03

I know how to pronounce it because I know the loch. Really nice name, yes you'll have to explain the pronunciation fairly regularly but I wouldn't discount it on that basis.

Mrsjayy · 14/02/2023 13:57

How would people have difficulty. This is my .baby oh she's lovely what's her name ? "Katrin" you don't pronounce the e so why would it be difficult or a problem
