Using my maiden name as a first name for dd

Expecting a dd maiden name is Clemence.
Would it weird to use it? or nice because it keeps the family name?

Obviously OP has already changed her surname to her DH’s name.., which is why she’s referring to her previous surname as her “maiden name”.

So it would be a bit odd if she gave her DD her previously surname when she doesn’t have it herself.

I like the name OP, either as first or middle name.

Why can’t your DC have your maiden name as her surname? You do realise we don’t have to change our name and DC don’t have to take on their dads name- when I see threads like this it gives me the rage

Me too. The term “maiden name” is hideously sexist. It’s 2023 FFS.

DD has my surname and DH’s as a middle name. It’s clear who did all the work and links her to both families. Win win.

Songlines · 12/02/2023 09:18

All my grandchildren have names with family connections and they love the links

Are you likely to have other children? What name will they have?

If I was a younger sibling and had no family name/historical family name- I personally might feel a bit left out and that the older sibling was favoured.

Sorry- just my own thoughts.

Not at all. Except for youngest dc, all our dc have a name (first or middle) that connects to dh or my families. When youngest dc asked why, we explained that we had pleased our families by including 'their' names in his siblings' names, and now we felt free to please ourselves. So youngest's names are only our favourite names, no compromises. He was very pleased.

Anyway, I think Clemence is a lovely name. Using your maiden name for your child's first name is an old tradition. That's how surnames like Sinclair and Lincoln became first names.

CastleTower · 12/02/2023 09:11

Lovely idea, and a very sweet and meaningful name.

mdh2020 · 12/02/2023 09:06

We used my maiden name as middle name for DC and GS also has the same middle name. They love it.

Joshitai · 12/02/2023 07:51

What if your DD wants your surname when she grows up? Many young women are doing this as a new feminism…taking their mum’s surname by deed poll when 18.

plumduck · 12/02/2023 07:46

They should probably stop asking the mums maiden name all together given many won't have a maiden name just their name.

Dd will have the same surname as me.

You are supposed to make up a name that you can remember as there are people whose mothers haven't changed their name or their mother's name is theirs as well. (I have one kicking me at the moment.)

That makes sense

That's not really weird but actually now you've said that I can see that maybe being an issue if she tells lots of people she's got her mums maiden name for her first name.

Hopefully people ask harder security questions though.

It's a lovely name and a lovely association. I don't particularly agree with any of the objections raised.

Twoinapod · 12/02/2023 06:38

Absolutely as a middle name, definitely not as a first name. Its really not a nice name plus all the issues already mentioned

plumduck · 12/02/2023 04:50

Reugny · 11/02/2023 23:39

Only weird if your DD truthful answers what is your mother's maiden name on form. For security reasons unless it's a form for background checks you lie.

TheOriginalEmu · 12/02/2023 04:45

My Daughter has my maiden name as her middle name, and I often call her by it as a pet name. I don’t think it’s weird at all.

SnackyOnassis · 12/02/2023 03:33

Not at all weird - my first name is my mum's maiden name and it's never been strange, it feels lovely to carry forward something that would otherwise have disappeared from her line.
Most people in my day to day life wouldn't know my mum's maiden name so it's just mine.
For forms that ask for mother's maiden name, usually that's as the answer to a security question so nobody is looking at that either!!

aonbharr · 12/02/2023 01:07

Not a bad name at all, never met one. Compared to some suggestions you see on this board, it is beautiful!

AlwaysLatte · 12/02/2023 00:46

It's lovely. Some of my relatives have their mothers' maiden names as first names.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 12/02/2023 00:32

Wont YOU feel weird calling her your surname that you had for years?

This is what I thought. Won't it feel like you're in the army, just calling out your own surname all the time?

I wouldn't use the name regardless because I think she will be Clem/Clemmy and I think that's awful! Far too close to clammy to be a nice name!

restie · 12/02/2023 00:40

My son Flynn is named after my Nan's maiden name...i love the significance it holds.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2023 00:36

Yes it’s nice.

I prefer it to Clementine - less twee

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 12/02/2023 00:33

I think the name is quite pretty. She'd be Clem Clemmy before the end of the first day though!

Very good point, especially if you still have family members with that surname
