Sorry but it sounds ridiculous

SatInMySpottyOnesie · 10/02/2023 09:20

If pronounced “Kafrey” I quite like the sound but the spelling is going to give the lad a life of hell
Give him a more phonetic spelling and maybe it’ll work 🤷🏼‍♀️ … but deffo a No this way 🥴

That is literally every name ever 🤦

Don't be silly. There are some names that have different spellings but at least if they are popular names people will know the alternate spellings.

Anyway, it's clear you are not looking for opinions at all. You are just wanting to tell people what an amazing name you've decided on for your child and have them wow at your creativity. If you care more about a critical part of your child's identity being a fashion statement for you then good luck to the child.

Oh, and BTW, has t crossed your mind that the name in question can easily be tweaked/mispronounced to sound like a highly offensive term of South African origin for non-white people?

How would you feel about being called Khafre? Imagine giving the name over the phone, introducing yourself at a party, what it would look like on a CV

Do you think every single person who lives in the UK has a nice easy to spell and pronounce English name? Have you never met anyone from another culture in your small world?

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2023 22:02

I think it’s fairly daft (unless you are Egyptian or an Egyptologist) but have heard worse.

I suggest Edward or George as a middle name.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 09/02/2023 19:16

I immediately thought "cafry" for pronunciation. I teach in a school in a predominantly white area of England and wouldn't blink at this name - there are very few classrooms these days which only have traditional UK names.

Some people might ask him if there's a family connection with Egyptian culture, or where the names comes from. But I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily.

I thought it was a 'modern' version of Jeffrey. Every day's a school day.

evemillbank · 09/02/2023 19:05

I think a lot of people would think you are saying Cathy. Which isn't great for a boy.

It's very close to the Arabic word for unbeliever, kafir, which doesn't have many positive implications. I really wouldn't, there's so many more meaningful names to choose from.

This was my first thought too.

wishingitwasfriday · 09/02/2023 18:50

I'm always intrigued to know what the parents names are in these situations. It always seems to be people who've had 'normal' names that are easy to pronounce who suddenly decide they want to name their child something no one has heard of.

banannabreadforme · 09/02/2023 18:50

If you really like it that's great but... sorry no. Its difficult to say and spell and will inconvenience your child. Perhaps their middle name?

itsnote · 09/02/2023 18:48

"Deschanel ..."

Her parents are famous 😂 they can get away with it

EyesOnThePies · 09/02/2023 18:47

I worked with a woman called Khefri. No issues with pronunciation.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2023 18:40

It's awful sorry

littleburn · 09/02/2023 18:37

Is it pronounced like the surname McCaffrey? But without the Mc obviously!

Theresacatonmylap · 09/02/2023 18:37

It’s a name you’re choosing for yourself, not your child. And he’ll be the one who has to live with it.

Cotswoldmama · 09/02/2023 18:29

The thing is those names you listed might have alternative spellings but everyone immediately knows how to pronounce them.

Spanielsarepainless · 09/02/2023 18:24

Ugly and ghastly.

tillytoodles1 · 09/02/2023 18:21

On another forum a woman called her son Ptolemy, Tolly for short. It wasn't from her culture or anything though, she just liked the name. I think his twin was Lewis or something like that, just really ordinary. He'll he a teenager now poor kid.

It is not every name ever.
Paul, Mary, Grace, Andrew, Kevin, Nicole
Unless parent make a daft letter change for the sake of it, those are examples of names which have an unambiguous spelling. Some of the names on your example list are just odd: Zooey?

Deschanel ...

JanusTheFirst · 09/02/2023 18:18

Please don't do this to a poor child. A life time of "What?" and having to explain and spell it.

itsnote · 09/02/2023 18:17

"Zooey?" Indeed and Hanah 🤣
