Expecting DD1 and I’m in love with the name Lucia.

I’m getting cold feet a little as I know there are a few ways of pronouncing this name and I don’t want to set her up for a lifetime of correcting people.

We would pronounce it the Italian way ‘Loo Chee Ah’ but we don’t have any Italian links other than we love to holiday there!

I’d be interested to know what mumsnetters think…

I love the name Lucia.

Lcb123 · 10/02/2023 16:59

You’d have to accept either pronounciation. Or just take the easy option and go for Lucy

JulietteCourgette · 10/02/2023 16:58

I think the level of discussion on here reaffirms my hesitations. Thanks everyone so much for your input, it’s much appreciated :)

@Teeshirt , but not everyone will know that it's using the italian pronunciation.
It's a latin name, and can have one of several valid pronunciations.

It's a bit like using a name like David and expecting people to use the french pronunciation

It’s a beautiful name but I would pronounce it Loo-see-a as there is not ‘ch’ in the name. So if you want it pronounced with a ‘ch’ and you don’t live in Italy she will be constantly correcting people I reckon.

There is a “ch” in the name…in Italian. “Ci” is “ch”.

I’d pronounce it Loo-chee-a as the default pronunciation, the Italian way. I know two and both are pronounced that way. The Spanish way is fine too -but it would not be a default pronunciation. And “Loosha” would be very odd.

SaltedChoco · 10/02/2023 11:40

I love it. Loo-chee-ah. It's beautiful

The English never pronounce it correctly, a lot of them use the name and mispronounce it "loo-see-a".
Good job I'm not english. @MammaDoTheHump , a lot of UK citizens are not english.
Loo-chee-a, Lucy-a, Loo-see-a, Loosha, Loo-thee-a are all valid pronunciations.

As far as I know the Italian Loo-Chi-Uh is the usual in the Uk (or was when it was last fashionable here earlyish last century), Loo-see-uh is Spanish and seems to be gaining ground now, probably because it’s intuitive from Lucy. Loo-sha is American and I think is pretty rare here - I’ve never heard it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/02/2023 21:57

I like it. I think it’s the default pronunciation, so it wouldn’t put me off.

Twoinapod · 09/02/2023 19:18

I’d say Loo-see-a I think most people would in UK as it’s the same sound as Lucy. I’ve never heard it said Loo-chee-a but then I don’t know any Italians.

MourningTea · 09/02/2023 15:07

I would pronounce it loo-see-ah or loo-sha.
Pretty but definitely going to be correcting lol.

Such a lovely name.

I know a Lucia. She is Lu-see-a, but also known as Lu, LuLu and Luce.

ApplePippa · 09/02/2023 12:51

"The English never pronounce it correctly, a lot of them use the name and mispronounce it "loo-see-a"."

The Italian pronunciation is not the only pronunciation in the whole wide world 😀

It's a lovely name OP, whichever way it's pronounced.

NowtSalamander · 09/02/2023 12:30

It depends how much it’s going to irritate you to correct it. I know and have taught a loo-thee-a (Spanish Spain pronunciation with the c lisped), loo- see - a (South American) loo-chee-a (Italian - but not the ONLY way to say it as a pp seemed to think) and a loo-sha. They were all used to it but if you don’t like Lucy I wouldn’t go for it as I know one or two who re-named themselves as they didn’t want to have the conversation every time.

It’s a really nice name though. I’d go for it!

RuthW · 09/02/2023 12:23

The Lucia I know is Lu -see a

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 09/02/2023 10:48

I always assume the Loo-CHEE-ah pronunciation. As in the Mapp and Lucia novels. But I don't think it's a massive deal if she needs to correct people who think it's Loo-SEE-ah.

MammaDoTheHump · 09/02/2023 10:20

My parents were going to call me that (I'm Italian) . I'm glad they didn't. The English never pronounce it correctly, a lot of them use the name and mispronounce it "loo-see-a".

elp30 · 09/02/2023 10:16

I have a Lucia.

She was born in England so a few people pronounced her name, "Loo-sha" or "Loo-chee-ah".

I'm Hispanic so it's pronounced, "Loo-see-ah".

It's a lovely name, regardless of pronunciation.

LightHousePanda · 09/02/2023 09:57

I've lived in Spain so only know the lu-see-a pronunciation. I imagine you'll get that pronunciation sometimes. It's a nice name either pronounciation.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 09/02/2023 09:29

Such a pretty name, whichever way it's pronounced.

And I like the Swedish Lucia bringing of light tradition, too.
sweden.se/culture/celebrations/the-lucia-tradition

The 12 yr old Lucia I know is a Loo-CHEE-uh pronunciation, nickname Luci (LOO-chee).

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 09/02/2023 09:08

This was on our list (pronounced Lu-SEE-a though) and we discounted it based on differences in pronunciation and the nn Lucy.

Enko · 08/02/2023 23:12

It's a lovely name people will get used to the pronunciation.

lottyh · 08/02/2023 23:10

My daughter is Lucia....pronounced the Italian way (loo-chee-ya).....always get complimented on what a lovely name it is! We shorten it to Chee or Cia.....only problem is we can never find anything with her name on in the shops and she hates being called Lucy! X
