Baby girl is due any day, and I still have no name for her. Thinking of Ayla, Kaylee, or Ella. Any insight would be appreciated!😘

how about something else altogether? Out of Isla, Kayleigh and Ella, I'd choose Ella, but it's very overused atm. Apologies for being picky but Ayla and Kaylee are awful spellings too

Ayla is a different name to Isla, not a variant spelling.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/02/2023 02:15

Keighley (kee-lee), town in West Yorkshire

The town Keighley is pronounced Keith-lee.

Ohh I see! Grin

Catnary · 09/02/2023 12:24

I think that @TheEverdelightfulsamantha was maybe making a joke about “Aye” , which we say for “yes”.

“ay” in May, hay, play is not pronounced eye in Scotland.

Pemba · 09/02/2023 10:21

How is that though? Don't you give horses hay, the month after April is May, etc? So how do the letters 'ay' sound like 'eye'? Our language is confusing sometimes!

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 09/02/2023 09:32

And the only Ayla I know is from the Middle East - and she pronounces it eyeLa - so I was also confused when you said you had a friend with a daughter called Isla - they are the same pronunciation. (I am in Scotland though - where ‘ay ‘ is pronounced ‘eye’ !)

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 09/02/2023 09:26

How about Kyla? I work with a Kyla and I think it’s lovely, and combines the sounds of Ayla and Kaylee but without the pronunciation or spelling issues

Pemba · 09/02/2023 02:49

I don't see how Ayla would be pronounced the same as Isla, surely it rhymes with Kayla or Layla? Except in Turkey apparently. It is a little bit ambiguous and characterless though, what about Layla?

Ella is nice but so common at the moment. Very slightly dull though. How about Eloise, Elise or Eleanor?

Kaylee has a pretty sound but lots of people will say 'dated'. Not sure about that spelling.

Beeswood · 09/02/2023 02:08

I like Ella, lovely name and easy to spell.

groovergirl · 09/02/2023 01:49

If you are set on Kaylie (for which your DD will not thank you), maybe update the spelling to Cayley or use the original Ceilidh. Also:

Keighley (kee-lee), town in West Yorkshire
Katherine, nn Kay
Caitlin, nn Cai
Kylie (a type of boomerang)
Michaela
Elissa
Elowen
Elvira
Ailsa

LuluBlakey1 · 09/02/2023 01:02

Kaylee is an awful name - really common and 'chavvy'. You'll brand her for life - she'll be judged by it in school, college applications, jobs.
Ella is lovely.

Anna, Ruby, Emma, Gemma, Maeve, Poppy, Chloe

Lalliella · 09/02/2023 00:40

Ella is lovely.
Kaylee is a bit ummm … Tracy 😬
Ayla - is that a name? People would think you said Ella, so you may as well call her that.

Eala, the Irish word meaning swan, is pronounced alla.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 08/02/2023 22:54

I don’t think the Turks wanted Kaylee 😁

RogersOrganismicProcess · 08/02/2023 22:53

Ayla is a lovely Turkish name pronounced like Isla.
Ella is also seen in Turkish and means hazel.
Will the baby have any a Turkish heritage?

whatausername · 08/02/2023 22:20

ANY ARE FINE SO LONG AS IT ALWAYS USES CAPITAL LETTERS. DON'T WANT YOUR CHILD BLENDING INTO THE CROWD. HER NAME SHOULD ALWAYS BE SHOUTED.

Ayla seems to be the new Ella. Kaylee is a bit 80s (but hey maybe you're into the 80s). All are perfectly fine and inoffensive.

Comedycook · 08/02/2023 21:49

Love Ella...it's so elegant and feminine without being frilly.

inky1991 · 08/02/2023 21:47

The spelling of Kaylee is chavvy IMO

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/02/2023 20:56

Ella is popular but nice

Kaylee is bloody awful

Is Ayla the same as Isla? Or like Ae-luh? If it’s the former just spell it Isla, if it’s the latter I’d stick with Ella, but it’s certainly better then kaylee (and spelling it Kayleigh is no improvement)

Alba, Anya, Aster, Astra, Elva, Zoe, Catrin, Caitlin, Keziah might be others

Bubblesdublin · 08/02/2023 12:34

Eala pronuced ay la..means swan in irish. Dont like either.

Spidey66 · 07/02/2023 23:55

Actually I always thought Marillion made up the name Kayleigh for the song!

Fish's ex girlfriend was called Kay Lee (I think Lee was her middle name), so Kayleigh worked for the song, and hugely popularised it, but they didn't actually make it up as such.

OP I don't know how you're pronouncing Ayla. I would say eh-la, which is pretty and also sounds strong and no-nonsense. If you want it pronounced Isla, I'd just go for Isla.

How about Kyla?

freesia86 · 08/02/2023 12:25

I like Ella out of your choices. You could always have a longer name with Ella as a nick name ie Gabriella, Mariella.
