Alexa, Lexi, Zara

Zara or Alexa (likely to be nn Lexi)? surname is a well known two syllable name ending in er.

Shame about Alexa but now totally unusable. I have 4 kids and 2 of their names have been used as brand names since they were born (now teenagers). One of them is Adam, which you would think is safe, but there has since been a crap car on the market with that name! I really like the name Zara from your list.

Thanks everyone for all the comments and suggestions! I think I like Alexi best as an Alexa alternative. The feedback that Alexa is like naming our daughter laptop, Google or hoover did make me laugh! It’s such a shame as it is a beautiful name but yes maybe it is ruined for this generation.

Zara seems to have gone down well with the majority in real life too, a few comments about the clothes shop but a lot of compliments. (between that and the Amazon device, maybe I have a thing for brands 😂)

Just so you know (but may not mind) Alexi(s) is the Greek male equivalent of Alexia. Sometimes with an S or without.

Both lovely names, I prefer Zara over Alexa just slightly. I do really like Alexis as well, which another poster has suggested.

I did read that Zara went up to number 16 last year so abit of a surge in popularity?

Maybe somewhere but not in England and Wales. It was #69 in 2021.

Well the worst is for those who are already named Alexa. Until recently it seemed to be an increasingly popular choice (well, it was always cropping up on MN baby names board anyway!) so there are quite a few Alexas around. I feel sorry for them!
There is a pressure group call “Alexa is a human” which sought to persuade Amazon to change Alexa’s name to something non human because human Alexas are being bullied. But of course, Amazon couldn’t give a shit.

You cannot use Alexa, but Alexandra nn -Alexis or just Alexis would be fine.

Both Alexa and Zara are beautiful names. I this Alexis or Alexandra would be a better compromise because of the tiresome Alexa jokes.

I don't think people should avoid baby names they like due to 'they might get bullied', kids should be taught not to bully. But this is like calling your child 'Hoover' or 'Google'. Just don't.
