Micah pronunciation

We have a 8 month old called Micah, we love not too popular names but never wanted to give our child a name with ambiguous pronunciation.

70% of health professionals I have come into contact with so far have mispronounced his name “Me-kah” instead of “My-kah”.

Will he will have to correct people his whole life and if so should we consider changing it before he gets any older?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I would pronounce it Mi-can too.

just spell it as you want it prounouced! X

msssm · 02/02/2023 22:35

I've always thought Meesha, and I love it.

ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire · 02/02/2023 22:32

If there's a footballing Micah that's good news. That's the easiest way for an unusual name to filter through to the masses.

rattlinbog · 02/02/2023 22:32

My-ka definitely.

thinkfast · 02/02/2023 22:32

I think either pronunciation is correct OP.

As someone with an unusual name (which I love), please be aware your son will spend the rest of his life confirming its spelling and pronunciation. It's not the end of the world.

I actually used to think it was pronounced Me Sha.. Blush

Me too. I've thought that since Micah Paris first burst onto the music scene!

It is the prophet my- ka. It definitely isnt a ch sound

The perils of phonetics! I meant "ch" as in Scottish "loch" but failed to say that. Sorry.

carpool · 02/02/2023 22:18

My DD has one of those names - when she was a child people who saw it written would mispronounce it and those who heard it would misspell it. It has gradually become more common though so not often a problem now. Micah is a good name don't change it.

I would have assumed "My-cha" as in the prophet, and of course as in the first part of Micha-el (a longer version of the name although the spelling has altered in English!)

It is the prophet my- ka. It definitely isnt a ch sound

CornishGem1975 · 02/02/2023 22:16

Mee-sha

SheWoreYellow · 02/02/2023 22:15

I would have presumed it was a variant of Mika, and so Me kah I’m afraid.

Highfivemum · 02/02/2023 22:15

We have three in my DD class and all said correctly. I wouldn’t worry

Alwayswonderedwhy · 02/02/2023 22:15

I've only heard it pronounced me-kah.

TwinsAndTiramisu · 02/02/2023 22:14

Meesha.

Your ds is going to be correcting people for the rest of his life, sorry OP.

StillWantingADog · 02/02/2023 22:13

My-kah
don’t change it though! I have an awkward name that nobody can pronounce. It’s annoying but not the end of the world at all.

Mydogatemypurse · 02/02/2023 22:13

Me kah

SapphosRock · 02/02/2023 22:12

Lovely name!

If it helps there is a Character in the L Word called Micah so it is unlikely to be mispronounced by any lesbians.

MajesticWhine · 02/02/2023 22:11

I know one who pronounces it My-kah and another one who says Mee-kah. So there isn't a right or wrong, and yes he will probably have to correct people his whole life.

PennyToffee · 02/02/2023 22:11

Always My-kah here.

ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire · 02/02/2023 22:10

Mica Paris is a meesha

I always thought Mika pronounced his as my-kah but I must be wrong.

Trethew · 02/02/2023 22:10

I would say my-ka, as in Lycra without the r. That is how you pronounce mica which is a silicate mineral. Assumed the name was for a girl until I read further.

Sunset6 · 02/02/2023 22:10

A lot of people will know it’s pronounced My-kah because of Micah Richards (ex footballer and TV personality)

CombatBarbie · 02/02/2023 22:08

DDs best friend is Mica pronounced Meesha

ShittyPeasantsFromHampshire · 02/02/2023 22:08

The only Micah I know is pronounced my-kah

Penguinsaregreat · 02/02/2023 22:07

Me kah
thats how I would pronounce it.
Obviously his close family and friends will pronounce it how they hear you say it.
