Baby name update - (Alpha)

paulinesmithson · 28/01/2023 21:31

This is an update post to the baby name thread I started a few weeks ago deciding whether or not to use the name Alpha for my DD (due March).
If you haven't already read the post, to sum up:
My grandfather Alfie passed just before we found out we are expecting my DD and I wanted to use the name Alpha to honour his name.

There were many mixed opinions but we have settled (DH and I) on the name Alfa.

Its spelling isn't the same as the version with all the bad connotations and I think using the f instead of ph is closer to Alfie anyway so this seemed like the best name we could find. DH is fully on board with the name and we plan to use the nickname Alf too which I think is so cute!

OP posts:

Am I the only one who thinks "A for Alpha"
When hearing the name?
I completely agree with previous posters who say to call her Alfie. It's hardly a masculine name. It can be very cool on a girl.

A is for Alpha, B is for bites, C for yourself that they taste just right?

I'm sure OP and her baby won't be too bothered by 1980's tv ad jingles!

I rather like Alpha - I'm slightly surprised it isn't a more widely established name, as it has a lovely meaning for a baby "beginning", "principal", "first". I'm not wild on Alfa, as this changes that Greek root, but I understand the sentiment.

The singer Alison Moyet - big in the 80s but still recording - was known as Alf. She even had an album called Alf. Check her out, she's cool.

People called Alpha

AnotherNameChangeYes · 29/01/2023 07:59

Well she’s sure never going to find a pen with her name on it.

28January · 29/01/2023 07:48

Poor kid!

IHeartGeneHunt · 29/01/2023 07:41

Put Alfa into Google and see if you want to call a little girl the same as any of the companies and products that come up.

ShandaLear · 29/01/2023 07:26

And you could use Romeo as a middle name. Alfa Romeo sounds fantastic - sleek and sporty.

Folkishgal · 29/01/2023 07:20

Alfie for a girl is VERY cute. Alfa is questionable. Sorry.

(My daughter has a an old fashioned very feminine name but her nickname, that we all call her, is typically male and she really suits it!)

Roseyposeypudding · 29/01/2023 07:13

I like Alpha. I really don’t like the spelling Alfa though. It looks made up and ‘yooneek’. Alpha is much classier.

MissMarplesbag · 29/01/2023 06:43

I've started a new job and there's someone called Cinderella who goes by the nn Cindy. She absolutely hates the names and is saving up to change it via deed poll. Be prepared for this possibility if you decide to give her this marmite name.

There are far more nicer names to honour your grandad with but if you're determined than have it as a middle name. She has to go to secondary school and deal with the bullying and name calling. Alfalfa beansprouts?!!

Awful name. Your poor daughter. And a nickname Alf for a little girl. Dreadful! Reminds me of an old man. You’re being completely selfish @paulinesmithson YOU want to call baby after YOUR grandad. YOU want to give the baby a dreadful name of Alpha in some sort of weird honour for your grandad when it wasn’t even us his name. YOU seem to think it’ll be a cute little story but its your poor child who will be stuck for her whole life explaining over and over in every new scenario that yes her name is alpha. No not spelt like alpha male spelt like the sprouts. Yes it’s not a real name or even a real word they made it up. Yes my mother calls me an old man name of Alf. Yes it’s a man’s name she wanted to call me after HER grandad. Yes his name wasn’t even Alpha but she decided Alpha spelt wrongly was like Alfie and on and on in what is a dreadful tedious and boring thing to have to do whenever you introduce yourself. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 you’re not even considering your little girl in this scenario so it’s even worse that she will grow up knowing that along with her awful name.

This ☝️

Billslills · 29/01/2023 04:33

If you are determined to do this then why not name her Alfie instead of a made up name?!

If you’re going to honour him, do it properly instead of saddling her with a ridiculous name.

You might be happy being called Alfa, but you’re an adult, not a child who’s got to deal with it through all those difficult and awkward child and teenage years ahead of her.

Alfie for a girl is a million times better than Alfa.

As someone said, there are girls called Rory, James etc. I know a baby girl called Tommie.

Aarohi · 29/01/2023 04:28

Alfa's a "real" (but pretty old-fashioned) girl's name in Finland, although to be fair I think it is a borrowed man's name, from Alfr, so probably the work of Swedish colonialists to boot. And it's pronounced a bit differently. Then there's Alfa Anderson (former lead singer of Chic).

And Alfre Woodward - fake man's name hasn't done her any harm! 😎

botleybump · 29/01/2023 04:13

I think this is a really cute name! It's not traditional, but I certainly don't understand the 'it's awful!' responses you're getting here.

Kids weren't bullied for names when I was at school, and I'd imagine it's even less likely now with the broad range of names we see these days.
With the exception of a friend who ended up with a rather unfortunate married name, I've also never heard an adult be mocked for their name; certainly not a first name atleast!

Not sure where the negativity here is coming from, but I think it's largely unfounded and think the name is lovely.

Nottodaty · 29/01/2023 04:00

I had a name for my daughter I was set on. Both agreed - then she was born and I took one look at her and said immediately that name doesn’t suit her.

Wait to meet her then chose the name.

atoxk · 29/01/2023 03:48

Give her her own name , but middle name to honour your grandad. What about Fi. Would you like your future grandchild to be called your name? If you would then you should definitely give her that name x

snowstorm2012 · 29/01/2023 03:07

No opinion either way - the first thing I thought of was Alpha from The Walking Dead.

pinkyvase · 29/01/2023 02:57

I like it! By the time she's in school there'll be MUCH weirder names on the register.

L0bstersLass · 29/01/2023 01:55

Her nickname won't be Alfie, it'll be Romeo.
Alfa. Ludicrous.

Enko · 29/01/2023 01:31

Beautiful name. Good choice op and dh
I suspect your dd will grow up to love her name.

erehj · 29/01/2023 01:22

Was there a girl in a pop group called Alfie or something like that? I'm not a huge fan of boys' names on girls and would really hate it for myself.

CallieQ · 29/01/2023 01:08

Not a good choice OP

Thisthattheother1 · 29/01/2023 01:05

paulinesmithson · 28/01/2023 22:10

I'd be perfectly happy to be referred to as Alf or Alfa

Great. Change your own name to Alpha nickname Alf in tribute of your grandad and put a bit of thought into naming your little girl.

BreviloquentBastard · 29/01/2023 00:55

You do realise you're naming a human being that's going to have to go through life with this name, right? Like she's going to be an actual person? Saddling people with a dead person's name is unfair to begin with imho, but a crap name on top of that is just salting the wound. Fucking Alf.

Boxerdogbillie · 29/01/2023 00:47

What are the bad connotations you speak of?

mumarooni · 29/01/2023 00:42

Sorry if you already had this recommended, I didn't skim whole thread. But I LOVE the name alpheba.
From Terry pratchet novel.
She's cool too, brave and clever. Alfie/Alfa for short.
