A friend has named her baby girl Ida. I think it's awful, just so old fashioned. What do you think?

It's not really your business, is it?

Plaster on a smile, coo over the baby and support your friend.

Spottypaperdoll · 25/01/2023 07:25

@PennyToffee loads of them near me in east London

Well of course they will because their friends will be called Ada, Cora, Adelaide, Evelyn, Violet etc. Do you not understand that names change with the generations?

I know no children called Ada, Ida, etc. I must move in very different circles to the oh so trendy MC of MN.

I'm not sure a teenager would thank you for calling her Ida. No matter how on trend you think you are now.

I like it, lots of names like that have long been revived (so you are 10 or 20 years behind the times). Unlike a lot of them
Ida isn’t overused.

goshdoyoumeantobsorude · 24/01/2023 14:15

Love it also; conjures up an imagine of a sassy, strong minded confident young woman.

Ariautec · 24/01/2023 14:09

Love it!

inquisitorgeneral · 24/01/2023 14:08

I think it's nice. I wouldn't choose it myself but it's different in a good way. As for it being an "old lady" name - Isabella and Amelia used to be considered "old lady" names too. Young people aren't going to know about the older connotations.

Butwhytho · 24/01/2023 12:39

What a nasty person you are.. also rather pathetic to start a thread just to slag off a baby’s name, the baby of a distant acquaintance no less.

Rockingcloggs · 24/01/2023 12:34

It's a beautiful name. As is Ada.

Spottypaperdoll · 24/01/2023 12:33

Tonnes of Ida, Ada, Eva, Ava type names round here. Doesn’t sound old lady to me, sounds like a toddler whose mom is a hipster and crochets in her spare time.

Spidey66 · 24/01/2023 12:30

I like it.

RuthW · 24/01/2023 12:16

Quite popular at the moment.

FatGirlSwim · 24/01/2023 10:55

I love it. Prefer the eye-da pronunciation to ee-da.

babyjellyfish · 24/01/2023 10:53

I love it. Pronounced Eeda.

ChnandlerBong · 24/01/2023 10:22

love it. only know of one - now age 16, so not too common. Punchy. can't be shortened. Easy to spell when they're little.

Comedycook · 24/01/2023 10:11

Names like this are fashionable again...Ida, Ava, Eve, Ivy...it wouldn't stand out as an old fashioned name if you used it today.

WaltzingWaters · 24/01/2023 10:10

I think it’s lovely

Pemba · 24/01/2023 10:07

I would normally expect it to be pronounced 'eye-da' the usual British way (and American maybe?). 'ee-da' is from continental Europe I think.

I do quite like it, pretty and simple. Similar to Ada which is fashionable now, but I prefer Ida.

LynetteScavo · 23/01/2023 22:24

I think it's quite on trend. It's an old lady name having a revival, like so many others. I really like it. I also like Frida.

purplepencilcase · 23/01/2023 22:12

I love it. Pronounced Eeeda.

Hobbesmanc · 23/01/2023 22:02

It's super popular in several Scandi countries. And I think of trail blazing director Ida Lupino. Cool name.

WaitingWatchingPeeing · 23/01/2023 21:54

Monjpetitardin · 23/01/2023 21:36

Actually, she's a very distant acquaintance - a Facebook person, whom I wouldn't exactly describe as a friend. I haven't met her for over 30 years. I just hate the name.

Except you did call her a friend…. In your OP!

PennyToffee · 23/01/2023 21:50

fantasmasgoria1 · 23/01/2023 21:46

It just reminds me of little old ladies with cauliflower perms!

Old ladies and old mens names are back in fashion.

If the person could be 95 or above if they were alive their name is probably back in.
