Emma or Sophie?

I really like Emma, to me it’s timeless not boring.

I don’t know any children named Emma, but I’d not think it at all odd it I did. Possible perk there with it being a unarguably normal name that’s unlikely to be super popular (I really didn’t want my son to have the same name as anyone else in his class for example)?

Nothing wrong with Sophie, but there’s so many Sophie/Sophia’s in schools now.

Emma

BevMarsh · 21/01/2023 10:09

Sophie

RuthW · 21/01/2023 10:07

Emma

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2023 10:06

Emma

I quite like Sophie but it’s more little girly

MarleneH · 21/01/2023 09:44

I think both are a little boring IMO, but if I had to choose maybe Sophie/ Sophia

SallyWD · 20/01/2023 23:37

I think I know more Sophies than any other name. I always find it a bit wet. Emma is very underused these days and lovely.

everythingsapickle · 20/01/2023 23:18

Prefer Emma but both are lovely IMO

Gingerlygreen · 20/01/2023 22:59

Emma.

There are so many Sophie's and Sophias, plus it's a much more solid name, Soph is very wet sounding

cravingtoblerone · 20/01/2023 22:50

Sophie. Much prefer it to Sophia, which seems to be everywhere these days...

indieray · 20/01/2023 22:35

Emma I like Emma-jo or Emma-Jayne
Not very popular these days but are nice in my opinion.

Waitingforcoffee · 20/01/2023 22:33

Emma works a bit better with a H surname than Sophie. The "F" sound of Sophie merging with the "H" of a surname feels slightly uneasy. Then again, names ending with "A" can also be tricky but it depends on the consonant before the "A" and the one after the "H" as to whether it works altogether.

Emily would be nice with a H surname.

I’d go for Sophie,

my shortlist for dd was Sophie, Emily Erin and Zoe.

though I do like Emma.

sunshinesobeautiful · 20/01/2023 22:28

Sophie is lovely!

evemillbank · 20/01/2023 22:19

Emma

FairytaleofNewHampshire · 20/01/2023 22:07

Sophie is lovely, I don't know anyone called that but I am related to an Emma in her forties and another in her fifties.

Idgaff · 20/01/2023 22:01

Emma…

As long as your surname isn’t Royd………

Bournetilly · 20/01/2023 21:58

Neither, they are both boring and overused IMO.

timoteigirl · 20/01/2023 21:56

Emma Sophie Lucy Amy Charlotter - all so similar. I like Sophia / Sofia

Ihavehadenoughalready · 20/01/2023 21:52

Emma is kinda boring.

I know an Emmalyse. She was always Emmalyse, too, not Emma.

Otherwise I prefer Sophie.

PMAmostofthetime · 20/01/2023 00:49

Love them both but I like Sophie mor.

Svolvaer · 19/01/2023 21:24

I’d wait till she arrives, I was going to call my second DD Sophie with a back up of Joanna. When she arrived she just didn’t look like a Sophie, it didn’t suit her, but Joanna fitted her perfectly.

GoT1904 · 19/01/2023 19:08

Emma 😊

Emmamoo89 · 19/01/2023 19:04

Twoinapod · 19/01/2023 18:48

@Emmamoo89 you are entitled to your opinion as am I. To me it’s like an irritating, dull hum sound, can’t understand why people like it. That is my own opinion, obviously loads of people like it as it’s incredibly popular.

It's a really strange opinion to have on it. Yes it is very popular as it should be

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2023 19:03

Depending on where you are and the surname, the H may get dropped and Emma Hunt might sound like Emmuh Runt.
