Elliot or Felix

I’m driving myself a bit mad - keep thinking I’ve chosen a name then going back to the drawing board. So I’m determined this is my final post and then I’ll go and live my life!

Here goes: Elliot or Felix (surname Marshall).

Worried about nicknames and keen to avoid anything mega posh, which in my mind would be like Tristan or Hugo (or maybe Sebastian).

Be kind :)

Elliot is lovely. Felix makes me think of cat food.

This. Love Elliot!

sunflowerdaisyrose · 18/01/2023 08:14

I much prefer Elliott (with two ts) but Max is still my favourite. I did know a really cool Felix who pulled off his name brilliantly so it grew on me a bit then but I wouldn't give it to a baby.

He’s a month old and nothing feels right

You don't seem to like either of these names enough to use so it's a bit irrelevant what others think.
Is there another name you prefer but are holding off from for some reason?

Mybumlooksbig · 18/01/2023 07:25

Love both names.
Felix was on my boys name short list

I like both - I think Felix fits into the posher category that you are not so keen on though - perhaps because I know a few little upper middle class boys called Felix. I love the name but I think the cat connection would be too strong for me.

I also like Elliott but imagine the t would be dropped at the end - perhaps Ellis could work instead.

I would hold on to both names and see what suits your baby when he's born.

And sorry to all the Elliot mothers out there! My opinion is based on my accent which makes vowels sound horrible and people don’t say the T

Blueberrywitch · 18/01/2023 03:40

definitely Felix! Elliot isn’t really a very nice sound. I know a Felix and he’s very handsome, clever and funny!

twinkletwinkle89 · 18/01/2023 03:29

I associate felix to a cat sorry, so I would go Elliot

ManchesterMarcy · 18/01/2023 03:20

We know a Felix and he gets teased with Fe-Fe which sounds more like a poodle than a boy. Very weak and a bit posh. I would go with Elliot. I like the nickname Ells, it's less common and not feminine or weak.

Maroon85 · 17/01/2023 14:25

I love both!

I have a 6 year old Elliott and still love it as much as I did when we chose it. No-one at school shortens his name to anything. I sometimes call him El/Els around the house though. The only thing to be aware of is the two spellings thing i.e. Elliot or Elliott. I chose 2 l's and 2 t's because I thought it looked more balanced (and it's the spelling from E.T. which was DH's favourite childhood film) but it's 50/50 as to how people (even close family) spell it

Yes it’s going to annoy me!

You have good taste in names. I have an Elliot and I also loved the name Felix but my Dh wouldn’t allow it and was adamant it was a cat’s name 😡.

My Elliot is 4 now and I love his name. We only ever really call him Elliot. Sometimes El or Els.

ZacharinaQuack · 17/01/2023 12:46

Felix sounds like a bit of a posh boy name to me.
I know an Elliot who gets called Otto for short.

Omgwhatthehell · 17/01/2023 12:45

I love Felix. Elliot is a perfectly nice name, but I think in a lot of areas of the country people will drop the T on the end.
I’m struggling to write it phonetically, but he’d often end up being called something like El-i-uh, rather than El-i-ut.
That would put me off.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/01/2023 07:59

Elliot is two syllables, @Wombat222 .

3 syllables, surely?

Ell - eee - ot

?

BettyBlue50 · 17/01/2023 08:59

Elliot!
I have a 17 year old Elliot, never knowingly called Smelliot!
We call him El or Els and so do his mates.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/01/2023 07:59

I have a child called Elliot and a cat called felix so you know my favourite. DS of course

How old is he? Does he have any nicknames? I just can’t quite seem to say Elliot easily to the baby - 3 syllables is beyond me apparently 😂

Elliot Marshall works better than Felix Marshall. EM sounds strong and straightforward, FM is a bit sibilant and drippy.

anotherscroller · 17/01/2023 07:19

I like both but I think Elliot goes best with your surname

wizzler · 17/01/2023 07:17

Prefer Elliott

Wombat222 · 17/01/2023 07:16

Wrongsideofpennines · 16/01/2023 15:33

Elliott. Felix is a cat food. And I think borders on the very posh sounding names you don't like.

But try calling him one for a few days and see how it feels.

Yes I did wonder if it was in the Sebastian category!

Felix for me, but you can't go wrong, both are nice.
