Emmie - just Emmie - is it usable?

Now we thought it wouldn’t be an issue at all because Ellie was popular for so long and they aren‘t really that different.

But the feedback we’ve been getting isn’t very positive. Do you think just Emmie is fine? I personally find it more mature sounding than Ellie but maybe that’s just me.

Emmy or Emmie and why?

Do you think there’s a hidden popularity because many Emmas and Emilys go by Emmie? I personally have never encountered one and the Emmas etc we know go by their full names or sometimes by Em.

Thanks

I like emmie but Emmy just makes me think of the Emmy awards

whoisbruno · 13/01/2023 21:06

I love the name Emmie. Go for it

OldTinHat · 13/01/2023 21:04

I really don't like the name Emmie. I know one, she uses it as a nn for Emma.

LetsDoThis2023 · 13/01/2023 20:44

I'd go Emmeline nn Emme

Jomummy1013 · 13/01/2023 20:39

I think it's cute. My youngest is Emily, we don't shorten it to Emmie. She is an Ems. Emily when she is naughty! Lol. I think Emmie is a nice enough name in its own right x

S25 · 13/01/2023 20:35

I know an Emmy in her 20s. I think it’s sweet. Though I prefer your suggested spelling or even Emme. If you like something you shouldn’t feel you have to find something else that you can derive your preferred name from :)

Cheshiremamalife · 13/01/2023 20:01

My oldest is called Emmie! Not shortened from anything, just Emmie 😊 xxx

Emmelina · 13/01/2023 19:57

No idea where my phone got “ripped” from. PEOPLE.

sanityisamyth · 13/01/2023 19:56

I know a pony called Emmy?

arcencielpoisson · 13/01/2023 19:56

I know an Emmie. She is a wonderful person.

My daughters name is a more traditional version of the name.

Choose the name you like

Emmelina · 13/01/2023 19:56

Ripped will always assume it’s short for something.
I was an “Emmie for short” as a child!

Lovebug06 · 13/01/2023 19:55

I know several Emmies. One very close family and nobody has ever said it sounds like a nickname or asked her full name. She is just Emmie.
My name is also what mumsnet describe as a nickname and not a proper name, but I've never had any comment on it and it's been fine as an adult. I never realised it was such a big deal until I came on here.
Emmie is a lovely name.

CaptainCallisto · 13/01/2023 19:46

I work in a primary school. We currently have three (Emmie, Emmie, and Emmy) in Y2-6. It's very much become a name in its own right, in the same way as Archie, Bobby, Ellie, and Katie, etc. Nobody batted an eyelid when we got our first one.

greenteafiend · 13/01/2023 18:48

It's very very childish sounding.

LynnImstuckontheringroad · 13/01/2023 18:37

I'd choose the Emme spelling, but like others think it's a nickname and would choose a full name for the birth certificate:

Emily
Emma
Emmeline
Emilia

Oldnproud · 13/01/2023 18:36

I remember my elderly grandparents referring to to a relation as 'Emmy' or ''Emmie' ( not sure about the spelling). That was some sixty years ago.

No doubt it was an abbreviation, but it sounds perfectly OK to me as a name in its own right nowadays, and it dates from the same era as so many of the other old names that are so popular at the moment.

OhGingleBells · 13/01/2023 18:23

I know an Emmie in her early twenties! Not short for anything.

She’s lovely and thus I think of the name as lovely! Usually I prefer names to have a longer version but don’t think it needs a ‘full’ version necessarily.

Outfor150 · 13/01/2023 18:18

It’s definitely a short form for a proper, longer name. I think it’s a bit forgettable. It seems a shame to me, because the longer forms can be nice.

Blahburst · 13/01/2023 18:13

It’s a lovely name. I prefer Emmy or Emme to the ie spelling.

Fuckstix · 13/01/2023 18:11

I'd say perfectly usable but a bit nothingy. One of the longer versions mentioned, or Emme which is an established name and is more 'complete' looking, have more substance.

emmathedilemma · 13/01/2023 18:08

I don’t know a single Emma or Emily who goes by Emmie. It sounds like a nn, and an irritating one at that.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 13/01/2023 17:53

The Emma I know well is called Emmie by family, but she’s a lovely girl and so I’m biased when I say I love it. It does sound like a nickname though.

mumonthehill · 13/01/2023 17:52

I am an older Emma and would hate for my name to have been Emmie. My closest friends call me em but i would find Emmie as a name too cute and personal.

Emdubz · 13/01/2023 17:51

What about Esme if you like the ‘me’ ending?

piedbeauty · 13/01/2023 17:48

It sounds like part of a name, not a real name, sorry. There are so many gorgeous names out there! Emmaline, Emily, Emma - Emmie could be a nickname.
