Hello! We are looking for a boys name to go with our 3yo Theo (Theodore) and I have stumbled across the name Artie, I love it and don’t know any, just wondering what others thought of it as I can’t ask friends and family in case we use it! Thank you!

I’d only do it if you’re prepared to name him Arthur. I have friends who were given a nickname instead of a full name and they find it irritating as adults not to have the choice, especially as so many nicknames are cutesy and more suited to little kids than adults.

Xmasgrinchywinchy · 12/01/2023 08:08

It’s fine no need for a longer name for the sake of it, nobody needs a choice of name, it’s just their name

DoYou · 12/01/2023 08:06

I like it. Danny Dyer has a son called Arty. I think I prefer the look of it with a Y rather than an IE.

Arthur on birth certificate

Notparticularlyslappable · 12/01/2023 07:59

Artie Zipp from The Simpsons is instantly in my head! I'd swerve that one to be honest.

DarkNecessities · 12/01/2023 07:59

If you shorten Theodore to Theo already then why not go for Arthur but call him Artie.

Don’t worry about family members with the same name

maddy68 · 12/01/2023 07:55

Love it

LetItGoHome · 12/01/2023 07:55

I would name him Art, then call him Artie as a pet name if you wish. I'm not a fan of cute names on grown men so I would give him the choice.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 12/01/2023 07:54

Not sure how popular it is in their culture but I know a few Indian girls called Artie- never heard of any males unless it’s shortened for Arthur but I’ve only really known Art to be a thing

PortiasBiscuit · 12/01/2023 07:52

Arthur is a better name for a CV, you can then call him what you like.

Percypiglover · 12/01/2023 07:52

I know an Artie that is just an Artie and it's a fab name

BlastedPimples · 12/01/2023 07:51

Arthur is a great name. Artie is a great nn. As is Art as in Art Garfunkel (who wouldn't have been christened as he is Jewish but anyway).

Arthur also goes well with Theo/Theodore.

Go for it.

Anothernameonthewall · 12/01/2023 07:45

There's a Spanish (I think) boys name, Arturo. That would shorten to Artie and goes with Theodore as a full name.

DisforDarkChocolate · 12/01/2023 07:44

I think it's lovely and definitely fine as a standalone name.

Slowgrowingelm · 12/01/2023 07:42

Legally call him Arthur but tell people his name is Artie. I had a friend who did something similar (they used the child’s middle name when they introduced the child - something to do with complications with an overbearing relative, so they decided they couldn’t use their favourite name as a first name). Then your boy can decide what to use when he’s older.

SunshineAndFizz · 12/01/2023 07:39

Lovely name but defo Arthur as the official name.

Tell the cousin it's a nod to him? Wouldn't worry about the work colleague at all. Tell them it's a family name.

Sleepthief · 12/01/2023 07:39

I knew a little Artie, short for Artemius

UsuallySuze · 12/01/2023 07:37

Lovely- NN for Artie which is very popular. I'd always go for the full name as that gives more options.

Twinklenoseblows · 12/01/2023 07:36

Love it and totally works as an adult. No one would bat an eyelid at Artie the lawyer or doctor or whatever.

HuntingoftheSnark · 12/01/2023 07:34

They already have a Theodore. I know a Charlotte who is always called Lottie, never Charlotte. I would go with Arthur and call him Artie. Art Garfunkel was christened Arthur.

Rauha · 12/01/2023 07:34

Love the name Artie. I prefer it with Arthur as the full name, but Artie is still an excellent name.

SallyWD · 12/01/2023 07:32

I don't think it works as a stand alone name. It's a lovely nickname but give him a proper name. Imagine if he grows up to become a high court judge and wants a professional sounding name. I'd go with Theodore if you won't use Arthur.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/01/2023 07:32

Its not a name in itself, its a nickname for Arthur, but Arthur is a good name, and Artie is a nickname for it.

Dont give a child a nickname that everyone will automatically assume is a nick name for a full name, he will spend his entire life saying "no - I'm just Artie"

CastleTower · 12/01/2023 07:30

Art is also a full name (Irish). How about Art?

Haus1234 · 12/01/2023 07:29

You could have it as short for Bartholomew (though that is a bit of a mouthful!)?

I think as your older DS has a long name and a short name it would make more sense to do that again.
