Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

OP posts:

A friend who worked on a maternity ward asked a very young new mum what name she was giving her baby. The mum gave the name of a deodorant and said she's heard it on TV and liked it! The 'baby' could now be on MN so I'll be discreet.

To be fair, most of the users on here are in the same position - commonly known as 'Mum' (well, I assume that; can't be absolutely 'Sure'!) Grin

Yes - I have a friend who has 3 children, she insists on making up names completely. One name is okay, it sort of sounds like a real name. One isn't great. And one is absolutely awful, to the point that I actually couldn't believe she was being serious when she announced it.

Another friend of a friend named her boy/girl twins a boy's name and then the same name with an A on the end for the girl. And it's not a name like Paula that that's common for. So their names are like James and Jamesa or Samuel and Samuela.

I was surprised when my sister called her baby the same name as the family dog!

My name ,when abbreviated, is the same as the dog we had when I was born (he was male and I am female). When my DM was pushing me in the pram and walking the dog at the same time, I imagine it would have been quite confusing to passers by!

I once had three different and wrong spellings of Siobhan in one group!

Dove?

Different spellings and different pronunciations. Can be so difficult: Maia/Maya - had three in a school, 2 pronounced it one way, but the third was different.

Tadhg is an Irish name, pronounced Tie. I've taught someone (around 10 years ago) called Tye

Friend of mine named their daughter Emma-Leigh, which I thought was a long winded way of spelling Emily. They pronounce it exactly like Emily too. Although I do think it looks pretty when written down.

MadameOvary81 · 09/01/2023 21:27

I've got cousins; Danny Boy and Danny Boy Jr. Not Irish, not travellers....they are vegan though, so....

asdfgasdfg · 09/01/2023 21:20

Queen Victoria, adonis, not family thankfully

HarlequinInTheThirdRow · 09/01/2023 21:18

Oh, and I knew someone who called her DS Senna

All her kids had odd names, but that's the first time I've known anyone named after a laxative

Only knew her for a few months through a kids group. She was a right PITA though, so backed off and stopped going to the kids group. Rather full of herself, over-bearing and very domineering

RideMeStallion · 09/01/2023 21:17

I know someone who named their boys Jack and Jake. And another couple who went for Oliver and Olivia. Not even twins. So confusing!

Initials bother me. Fred Luck = FLUCK. Just why?

S Pray etc

Teachers I have encountered, F. King and A. Gay though the latter probably predates the use of Gay not meaning happy etc.!

My kids have quite weird names. My oldest loves his name, and it’s the most out there. My middle child did ask to change his name to Kevin which I think is much weirder these days then the one he’s got.

BrownDaisy · 09/01/2023 21:14

At least nobody has done a Sarah Cox and named their son Isaac!

Mycatsgoldtooth · 09/01/2023 21:12

No one I know has ever done a really out there name. A few quirky old fashioned type ones but they’re nice - an old friend has a Bertie and a cousin has an Agatha and an Alma. But they’re lovely IMO. Some people in our family found Agatha and Alma really shocking 🙄🙄

FellOnMyArseToDay · 09/01/2023 21:00

Cardi? Tbf all names have been out there once and just become
more circulated.
