Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes a friend called her child by an outlandish first name from Shakespeare- he's now a teen and goes by his normal boring middle name.
Another friend gave her DD what I would call an old lady nana name, this was 20 years ago and its now popular so I guess she was ahead of the game!

Caliban? Dogberry? Banquo? Bottom?

I'm desperate to know now, @Runnerduck34 !

Oh yes - Dashiel raised my eyebrows involuntarily. As did "Cameron" in a family where the elder three children have very classic names and it just didn't fit!

Was Cameron for a girl and that is why it raised eyebrows? It is very much a classic boy’s name in Scotland.

Paul?

Colin, Philip, Ian, Leslie Steven, Peter, Simon or David would be my bet. Nice solid British names but not the least bit fashionable these days.

Yes. 'Griffin' was misjudged, in my opinion, but of course I'm keeping it to myself!

Oh no why is Griffin misjudged? This is high on our list for a boy, now second guessing

Reugny · 08/01/2023 21:37

@purpletowelette I was told on a thread on here that it was weird to check your child's name in other languages, check initials etc and make sure it wasn't associated with a criminal.

Gnatalie. True fact. Friend of my DS.

Mona. I keep thinking ‘How could you?’

Same family, three children, Dollar, Cash and Cent...bloody ridiculous

The family I know called their sons Cage and Cash.

I've never heard of either, young or old! They live in the North of England in case that's relevant at all.

I've heard some absolute clangers (I'm in the thick of the new baby years), but most are down to cultural differences tbh. I've learnt to develop an automatic "Aw, lovely!" reflex. The worst off the top of my head are Serena (you can hear her from three blocks away when she's being delivered to nursery) and Manuel, whose south American parents just stare blankly at the umpteenth person holding back a Fawlty Towers impersonation.

My pet peeve, pun very much intended, is the dog name trend. In my local park people shout out for Rex, Barney, Bo etc, and I don't know anymore whether to expect a labradoodle or a toddler.

Rex is a lovely name.

South East?

No… Oh god there’s 2 of them 🙈🙈

Bloatstoat · 08/01/2023 20:57

My cousin has called her two children names with only one letter different (think e.g. Lana and Lena) they're both ok names but it just seems weird with them both having pretty much the same name.

Someone i went to school with has done this: Myla & Lyla.
Just why??

Probablymagrat · 08/01/2023 21:27

BabyFour2023 · 08/01/2023 21:23

Oh gosh; we either know the same person or 2 mothers did this 😂🙈

South East?

candlelightflora · 08/01/2023 21:27

Exactly - people think ‘I don’t know anyone called Ivy, it must be really unusual.’ But it isn’t unusual, you just don’t hang out with many small children!

Definitely this. My colleague (in her fifties) was recently telling us about her new great niece Amelia, and that she has a lovely unusual name!

Mommabear20 · 08/01/2023 20:16

DN middle name is eagle 🤦‍♀️ parents have no love of birds, or anything even remotely related so god knows what made them choose that!

Are they Crystal Palace supporters?

Not a family member but an aquaintance named her three sons Ronnie, Reggie and Frankie, after the very violent and reprehensible gangsters.

Oh yes. We have two DNs with names that are so far out there as to be laugh out loud. They’re just like “wtaf”? names and their parents are fairly normal individuals, one of them is a teacher so should know better but there you go.

IME, it’s the teachers who have the “out there” names as they try and go for a name they’ve never taught. This is what my friends logic was anyway. Her childrens names are definitely, erm, unique.

LunchBoxPolice · 08/01/2023 21:21

I know an Oak, which I wasn’t keen on at first.

Yes we had a family member saying they chose unusual names as why would you want to use a common name that's in the top 50. One of their names has actually really risen in popularity and is also used for both sexes which hasn't gone down well!

DD1 is actually the only one in her school with her name despite it being well known - precios v high and top 30 now probs? I said I don't care about popularity if I like the name.

I don’t mind popular names either though. They’re usually popular for a reason - because they’re nice! One of my kids has quite a popular name which is made much more popular because there are two versions of it (something like Eva/Evie) but realistically we don’t meet too many of them. It’s not like she’s one of 12 in her class or anything. The worst that happens is that sometimes she is ‘Eva J.’

Yea! Family friend gave their newborn son a name I've not heard on a human before. It's usually an object that animals are kept in.

Well done everyone!

It was mentioned in one of the guesses...

Penn
Crate
Cage
Cat bed
Guinea pig run
Hutch
Zoo
Menagerie

With what you said about trendy friends choosing very popular run of the mill names though - I notice this a lot with people who aren’t around many small children. I work in nurseries and I’m always hearing people say they picked the name x (say Albert or Margot) because they don’t just want their child to be another Alex or Megan or Chloe or Darren. I feel like people sometimes pick names that would have been unusual when they were young without realising they’re actually very very popular nowadays!
