A friend of mine is called Delilah and would like to call her baby boy Samson. Good idea / bad idea / neutral? What do you think?

Very strange a bit like a father "Adam" wanting to name his daughter . "Eve"

squatternutbosh12 · 09/01/2023 15:57

If she wants anyone who knows her name giving her weird looks when she introduces her baby she should go for it. It’s so weird that people probably wouldn’t even say anything out of awkwardness/politeness but there will be looks.

Also Samson is a good name but as pp says it will be spelled Sampson, a lot. My cousin has a Samson and this drives him bats. Even i spell it Sampson sometimes, by accident and I’m cross with myself if I do, but it happens.

My guess would be she doesn't know the story behind the names and just thinks it sounds cute

My guess she knows the story very well and it's the reason she's picking Samson

Could be worse, Mum could be Judith with baby Holofernes?

The OP’s friend (adult) is called Delilah. Delilah is considering naming her own baby Samson. So mother and son, not siblings.

Lovers in the Bible, yes. Mother and son in OP’s scenario.

Not as bad, but still no

Naming siblings after famous lovers is a great idea.

Ha ha, said no one ever. Does your friend actually know the story OP? I don't but I remember it from a Virgina Andrews book!

You sure about that? In the bible it's lovers.

parsniiips · 09/01/2023 06:34

Would sound like they've come straight from emmerdale farm

It's mother and son, not siblings. Still weird though.

Oh, please, no.

Rainbowshit · 08/01/2023 23:25

Ew, no. It's pretty weird given the story.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/01/2023 23:12

No.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 08/01/2023 23:06

They're children, not goldfish FFS

redandwhite1 · 08/01/2023 22:59

They're also the sunderland football mascots 😂

SnackyOnassis · 08/01/2023 22:51

Not good for all the above reasons - it's not even subtle! If Samson's sister ever offers to give him a haircut, whatever happens next is all their mum's fault...

Superduper02 · 08/01/2023 00:08

Sampson and Delilah were lovers then enemies so on that basis, I'd say that is WEIRD

This

UsingChangeofName · 08/01/2023 21:30

In the unlikely event this is true, then it is clearly bizarre.

Kanaloa · 08/01/2023 21:22

It’s obviously a terrible idea. But as they’re not your children it’s not really your problem. The saving grace is that for the majority of their lives they will not be introduced together - sibling names ‘matching’ really only matters until they’re in secondary school.

Dogsogdog · 08/01/2023 21:17

Is her surname Dingle ?

GreenManalishi · 08/01/2023 21:15

When there are so many other names in this world, why would you?
