Boy names ending in schwa

A bit stuck naming our little boy. I've come to the conclusion that we love boy names that end in an 'uh' schwa sound... we have a standard British English accent with 'r' sounds not produced at the end of words, so that would generally be names ending in er/ar/ir but also a/ah, for example names we like include:

Caspar
Asher
Leander
Judah
Micah
Archer
Wilbur
Ezra

(These names all end in the same sound for us, which I know might not be the same for other accents)

We wouldn't go for anything top 100 popular and open to more unusual suggestions. Please help 🙏🏻

Ezra has to be top 100 by now surely? I feel like every boy I’ve heard of being born in the last 2-3 years has that name.

Sawyer
Archer
River
Xavier
Spencer
Wilbur
Walter

Yeah it is, it's a name we like a lot but wouldn't use because of its recent popularity. Love River 😊

Do you live somewhere where most other people have the same accent as you?

TheWumpus · 07/01/2023 08:12

I've got a little Leander, it gets a lot of compliments. It's relatively common in the country DH is from, but a lot of people in the UK haven't heard of it.

Because they don't know it, I think it's fairly frequently assumed to end in A and be a girl's name. If that bothers you it might be something to bear in mind for any uncommon name ending in a schwa sound.

Not getting the 'schw' in these, other than Joshwa.

It is worth considering that lots of people will pronounce the endings of these names differently to you. So if it would bother you that people pronounce the ending of Lysander differently, it’s worth considering that.

Asher is my favourite.

MissedItByThisMuch · 07/01/2023 07:57

Lysander
Hector

I was looking for names ending as you suggest and found this. I'm not trying to derail your thread, I just felt I had to bring it to the attention of a wider audience!

IT IS REAL. You wonder what his parents were thinking, (although it was 1893)!

Hunter
Taylor
Parker

  • many other names like that

Josiah

Asa
Zachariah

34and3 · 07/01/2023 07:23

Joshua
Jonah
Luca
Fletcher

But they'll all end up shortened most likely anyway!

Jonah

Lots Biblical names in that category! Off the top of my head, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeconiah. Depending on your accent, "-or" names like Hector might also fit.
