The name Ebony?

Hi!

My baby girl is just over 2 weeks old with a full head of jet black hair. Her father is Jamaican so it’s likely she’ll inherit his curls, like her older sisters.

We haven’t been able to agree on a name yet, but we both like Ebony.

It’s not too unusual, but sort of unique, and sounds both soft and strong at the same time.

I’d like your opinions on the name please, do you like it? Have you met many?

Thank you in advance x

@happylittlesoul
It is a beautiful name.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 10/01/2023 11:03

Ebony is lovely.

Esme always seems such a meek little name to me. I like Estelle and Estella though.

Thank you for your input everyone! We’re going with the name Ebony :)

I much prefer Ebony to Esme. It’s got flair.

I love the name Ebony, pretty and strong sounding, known but not overused!

I only know two Ebony’s, both are white, so I just think of it as a pretty girls name without assuming heritage.

I think choosing the name you want to choose, rather than worrying about a fictional future employer is so important. So many job applications are forms to fill in rather than cv’s to remove any bias. She might have her own business and be the boss for all we know! :)

I LOVE this!! So very true :)

The other name we like is Esme, what do you think?

Estella sounds beautiful, but we realised sounds a lot like DH’s favourite beer (Estrella), which made us chuckle.

Estelle is nice too - but I’m not sure it suits her.

I like Elodie, just not as much. DH also doesn’t think it would suit her at all.

Is this an association that would be commonly known? I wasn’t familiar with the term in that context but surely it was a name before it was used in this way?

Thank you for the suggestion :)

Yes, it’s used as a category. I think it’s pretty widely known, especially by men. It’s annoying if you like the name but I wouldn’t want to put that in anyone’s mind when they were talking to my daughter I guess.

Estella maybe?

Aphra is one of my most favourite names— strong yet pretty and easy to pronounce and spell and not too common.
Enjoy your sweet baby girl — some days I feel like I’d love to do it all again.

HamFrancisco · 03/01/2023 17:02

Aphra IS a lovely name. And Aphra Behn was a bit of a trailblazer.

Is she black or mixed race? If not then no, it's not a name I would choose.

Did you read the OP?

RambamThankyouMam · 03/01/2023 07:09

It's a nice meaning but an ugly sound. Plus all I see is "bony".

That's a weird choice for a very pale child. It's like calling a child born in September 'April'.

I know two white girls called Ebony one of who is very pale. Her Mum was and is a Goth and chose the name for that reason. Nothing to do with her skin colour. She's 18 now and other than a comments about her name being porn genre from lads her age and the odd sleazy older man, she loves her name.

There was an April in my year at school who was born in October. I know a summer not burn in summer, two Junes who were not born in June. A Dawn who was born at night. Probably loads more examples of I think of all the kids I've worked with.

I'm like this if I loved a name I'd just call my child that name

"Ebony" is a term used in pornography to fetishise black women. I don't know how prevalent it is, but it's worth being aware of, especially as your child begins using the internet and might Google her name.

Sadly this was my first thought too. Worth considering imo.

MoscowMules · 02/01/2023 20:30

Ebony Delphine is a beautiful name.

I also don't associate it with porn 😳

The only thing I think of when I hear Ebony is the song

" Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don't we?

Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

And I think that's rather a beautiful reminder. Why don't we live together in perfect harmony?!

Delphine is a famous porn woman. Pairing it with Ebony would be a terrible choice!

I clearly need to start watching more porn. New Year's resolution maybe.

Haha 😂 i’ll pass on that one - I feel it may ruin too many names for me!

I've never associated it with porn either, it's a lovely name. Especially with Delphine

Delphine was actually my nanna’s first name, and the same thing about prn was brought up when I suggested using it with Esme.

I think it’s only a concern if you’re familiar with that world, whereas I’m not, and children her age definitely won’t be - not for a long time anyway.

I think Belle Delphine is a stage name and she will be long gone from the mainstream by the time my LO grows up.

I appreciate your opinion :)
