I met a 3 year old Hilda the other day and it was surprisingly quite cute on her! Can you ever see it making a comeback? I suppose it’s quite similar in sound to Matilda which is popular.

Fab heritage name. St Hilda was awesome. One of the most significant women in early Christian British history. A feminist. And educator.

Agree with @UsingChangeofName

It is very much same era and style as other 'old lady names' which are gradually making a come back, eg. Mabel, Maud, Olive, Elsie etc

I remember my Mum (now in her mid 70s) being horrified when Emily, Charlotte etc came back in fashion as they were the names of her ancient great aunties etc!

I don't like Hilda or Matilda.

nobodygirl2023 · 31/12/2022 07:23

I love it. Was on my list for DD2 as well as Hildy but DH vetoed. Most of the top 100 names these days are names like this making a comeback.

RhubarbFairy · 31/12/2022 07:21

Wouldn't surprise me to hear its coming back. I met a Maud this week.

There’s only one Hilda.

Very marmite name (it's a no from me ... so is Doris)

Pemba · 31/12/2022 03:42

No, it's got very frumpy associations, at least in this country.

LaLuz7 · 30/12/2022 23:04

I quite like it.

Sounds strong but still feminine.

BasiliskStare · 30/12/2022 22:59

My paternal granny was Edna - yet to make a comeback but popular at the time ( 1920s ? )

TigerDroveAgain · 30/12/2022 22:57

Hilda and Doris : just no!

But I do take PP’s point that these were ancient names for those of us of a certain age, however: NO

Thedogscollar · 30/12/2022 22:54

Sorry it's beyond hideous.

UsingChangeofName · 30/12/2022 12:32

I think it fits with all the other names of that era that are highly fashionable now. Names that I think are very old fashioned ( my great Aunts) but that people young enough to be having babies now won't remember people who had those names.

CaptBuckyOHare · 30/12/2022 12:29

I think Hilda is fairly popular in Sweden & Finland? Scandi names in general are becoming more popular in the UK (e.g. Magnus, Soren, Freya, Ingrid), so it might well see a bump in popularity here. Plus there's quite a popular animated series on Netflix called Hilda, which probably helps.

I don't mind it. I think it's a name that could easily grow on me the more little Hilda's I met.

KirstenBlest · 30/12/2022 10:56

I like it. Doris is another one that deserves a comeback.
