Lois or Hazel?

My neighbour is a Hazel and she's a caaaah, so I don't like that name. Lois reminds me of louse.

Both good names. Feminine but strong rather than frilly - either would make a refreshing change.

When I was teaching, Hazel was one of those names where you could safely assume if you saw it on the register that they’d be sensible, well behaved and often slightly artsy (all of the Hazels I taught had parents in creative industries). Never taught a Lois but DD has a lovely friend in Reception with this name.

On balance I think I prefer Hazel, as I love its warmth and the nature and colour connection, and like that it’s a rare nature name for girls that doesn’t sound twee/try hard.

Lois. I used to wear Lois jeans in the 70s 😁.

I worked with a very bitter woman called Hazel when I was at college. It’s coloured my view of the name. I like Heather though.

Other names. Nature themed: as I said before Rowan is nice. Holly. Fern. Maple. Heather. Sylvie/a. Ash. Larch. Lark. Autumn. Briony.

That are a bit like Lois and Hazel?

I really like the name Hazel. I like the sound and the association with the Hazel tree. It's an unusual sounding name and more definite and not frilly as the tendency is at the moment. It seems to fit with a lot of the tree and nature names like Rowan etc.

Lois I haven't heard a lot until quite recently on MN so seems like it's quite fashionable? At least on MN. I don't really love it as much personally but can see it is quite characterful and a change from the more vowelly complicated names. Maybe the Lois Lane is very prominent assocation but she was quite a determined sort of person so that's a good association really.

Hazel is beautiful, I don't think it is old fashioned at all these days. I know a 5 year old one and a newborn one. Lois is ok, but as has been pointed out there are two very different pronunciations of it.

Both lovely I think I'd flip a coin. I'm in teaching not regular education and come across 500+ pupils a week, neither name is common but of course not unusual.

Just beware of the surname thing with Lois as the PP above pointed out.

I love Hazel too it's the colour of my DH and eldest's eyes, so I'm biased 😉

I like them both but slight preference for Lois as it has a mysterious sort of vibe whereas Hazel is more earthy.

I prefer Lois of the two you mentioned.

Hazel conjures up an image of a child with mousey brown hair and hazel eyes for me. Any other colour combination would just seem wrong! lol

I really don’t like Hazel, but I think it’s because a friend of mine had a terrible stepmother who said it AY-ZWIL. It’s OK, if a bit spiky

Lois is one of the ugliest names I can think of. So blubbery and claggy.

Unnecessarily unkind.

I prefer Lois but both are lovely.
