Rupert

Can I get some honest opinions on Rupert please? It has always been one of my favourite names - I think of it as strong and classic. However, I recently read a few comments about how ridiculous people think it is! It's currently at the top of my list for baby due next year (we don't know the gender yet).

Thanks!

I don't like it either, for the reasons stated above. Rupert Campbell-Black did still manage to be sexy AF, however!!

greenkitten2 · 26/12/2022 16:22

I love it!

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 26/12/2022 16:21

I love the name Rupert

HoldingTheDoor · 26/12/2022 16:06

It's terribly wet and very unattractive. There's something comedic about it imo.

JoyfulGirl · 26/12/2022 15:50

Sorry, I agree with those saying it’s a bit twee and posh. There are worse names, but I do roll my eyes whenever I hear of a baby Rupert.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/12/2022 15:38

Another fan of solid traditional names, John, Richard, Anna, Sarah are all great.

I'd add Christopher, Patrick, David, Ellen, Victoria and Mary to PP's list above.

Zuve · 26/12/2022 15:33

Personally I always liked John, short easy and ageless, or Richard which will be shortened to Rich. Modern and smart. For girls I do like Anna which sounds modern, smart and neat. Or Sarah for the same reasons. These are names a kid can be proud to own.

HowForNow · 26/12/2022 15:28

Not to my taste. But I don't like Reuben or Rufus either so maybe more the top sound better m not keen on. I would expect it of an upper middle class person, it's not offensive but it's certainly not a name everyone could carry off.

CremeEggThief · 26/12/2022 15:08

I think it depends where you live, if you love it and would like to use it. It would be seen as extremely posh in my area and extremely posh would always have negative connotations here.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/12/2022 15:04

I like it, but I suspect it won't be as unusual as you hope; I know of three baby Ruperts born recently...

Jellybean2023 · 26/12/2022 15:01

I like Rupert and prefer it to Reuben by a million miles.
I do think of the bear, or very posh boys, but I dont think either of those things are a negative?
Go with the name you love.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2022 14:48

It's neither classic nor strong, and it's very twee.

Charliehaus · 26/12/2022 14:45

If it’s your fav name use it!!! It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
I remember telling my lovely friend my favourite girls name and she was horrified, hated it , thought it sounded cheap. The thing is it hasn’t changed my mind one bit and if I had a daughter I would name her my fav girls name

Apollonia1 · 26/12/2022 13:53

I think of Rupert Campbell-Black.

I like it.

SallyWD · 26/12/2022 11:22

It's kind of an upper class twit's name. It's not a cool name. He'd probably get teased by the lads when he's a teenager.

FT123456 · 26/12/2022 11:20

Everyone will have different taste when it comes to names. As others have said if you love it that's all that matters

DancingSober · 26/12/2022 11:11

I know a little Rupert and also one in his thirties. I'm not mad on it tbh. The older one gets Roo and Rupes, never Rupert. He does manage to pull it off tbf and is very cool and untwee

Roselilly36 · 26/12/2022 11:08

Not a name I would chose, tbh. We were shopping in Aldi once and a mum in there kept calling out Rupert to her toddler, people were smirking, which I thought was extremely rude.

bigbluebus · 26/12/2022 10:35

One of my neighbours had a cat called Rupert. Every time he failed to return home, I could hear her outside calling Wooooperrrrrrt. Wouldn't be my choice of name - I'm also old enough to have received Rupert the Bear annuals for Christmas and to associate it with the kind of people who buy coloured moleskin or corduroy trousers. Sorry.

Cuppasoupmonster · 26/12/2022 10:23

MWNA · 26/12/2022 06:48

It makes me think of twats in red trousers.
And the bear.
It's a silly name.

Same, sorry but it’s so twee

AllOfThemWitches · 26/12/2022 10:21

I would assume you were wealthy.

Dinosaurus86 · 26/12/2022 10:18

I have a Rupert so obviously love the name. There is the bear, but I don’t think that’s a negative connotation. We even call him bear - or Ru. When I was researching the name, I’d see people suggesting Reuben or Rufus instead but I disagree that they’re better names! Each to their own. Also don’t think it’s such a “posh” name nowadays - we certainly aren’t!

alloutofcareunits · 26/12/2022 09:43

My next door neighbour is called Rupert, he's a lovely funny man and I've never seen him in red trousers! He does have an unusual profession which suits his name, I think his partner calls him Roop. I love the name, I don't think kids know Rupert the bear these days

toastofthetown · 26/12/2022 09:17

I like Rupert and I think Roo is a cute nickname. Rupert has risen significantly in popularity in the last ten years and is now in the top hundred. Based on the popularity alone I wouldn’t worry about it seeming ridiculous as the popularity will dilute cultural associations with names.

RooBear9 · 26/12/2022 09:08

I have a Rupert, hence the username. It suits him so much. My DM calls him Roo Bear which I think is a cute nickname, but DH and I call him Roopi Poopi Blush

I also love Reuben but DH didn't.
