Surname begins with M so this is the one where G needs to be avoided.

"Freddie" sounds a bit "cheeky working class lovable scamp". I agree with an earlier poster, call him Afred or Wilfred etc. and it can be shortened to Freddie if you must.

Had my baby and didn’t call him Freddie in the end. But thank you.

@dishyrishi Yeah this is true. We haven’t officially registered it yet but I think we’ll be going without a middle name.

dishyrishi · 21/05/2023 19:57

Will you ever use it?

Does it ever matter?!

Use a grandfathers name or something nice like that, your child will never use their middle name, so may as well be Flintstone or Frog

@MerryChristmasToYou god your so hilarious. Is this your day job or?

@BigglyBee We went with a different name in the end. But thank you.

Are you putting Freddie or Frederick on the BC? I know a Freddy whose full name is Frederick David James, with an M surname. I like it, and the initials aren't unfortunate.

John came to mind

Hi @TheBirdintheCave !

Genuine thanks to all those who have made suggestions.

Freddie vs Frederick is another subject of debate. Yet there’s already another thread on that (not mine) so I won’t drag it into this one too.

Freddie not short for anything has been very popular for about 20 years

Purplemagnolias · 19/12/2022 16:31

Surely Freddie is a nickname. What will his actual name be?

Frederick presumably

To answer your question Ferdinand, although unique, is difficult to use as a full first name. It’s the other end of Freddie.

If you are in love with Freddie , I would go with Alfred or Wilfred , which he can also make Alfie, Wilf or even use them easily on their own. I know a 5 year old Wilfred for example and it suits him great. It’s good to give him options when he is older, and that’s why I think that Freddie at the birth certificate is quite childish and very restrictive.

I hear you and part of me thinks this too. Trouble is, virtually all the names we like suffer from the popularity problem. Some even more so. Other contenders have been George, Leo, Oscar and Henry.

I’d much rather one of these than a name which has gone out of fashion and will lead to a lifetime of everyone assuming he is a generation older than he is before meeting him, e.g. David, Paul, Robert. Or a name which isn’t popular because frankly it’s just weird, poncy, pretentious, geeky or downmarket. At least if a name is popular, it means people like it.

I’m quite fond of Ferdinand. Maybe you prefer that?

Or maybe you have other suggestions? Please feel free to list any. I’m very open to hearing of genuinely attractive names which are not popular.

I like Elliott, Elias, Michael, Adam, Nicholas. All of them long and not shortened.

But that’s me, I wouldn’t name my baby anything in the top 10 but obviously the majority does. It’s still fine!

Alfred would most naturally shorten to Alf or possibly Alfie when young. The emphasis is on the Alf not on Red.

What about all the Williams who go by Liam? Not all diminutives come from the start of the name.

Call him Alfred as a first name, nn Freddie? Then you can have whatever G name you want in the middle. If he’s being formal enough to use a middle initial then he can use his full name. I think Freddie is better as a nn anyways..

Yes this is the way to go.

Alfred George.
