Nox for a boy

My DH and I love Nox for a boy. Is it usable? Please be honest, I won’t be offended.

It means ‚night‘ and we got it from a book.

My concern is that people may spell it Knox or that it’s too unusual.

Sister is called Ruby.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
megletthesecond · 16/12/2022 11:14

No.
It's a Harry Potter spell / smart speaker command for a start.

ScrollingLeaves · 16/12/2022 11:06

Too unusual.
It means night in Latin.
Then we have the word ‘noxious’ so that could be a cruel nick name. Do you want those allusions?

Isn't it slang for nitrous oxide??

No, it’s shorthand for nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution.

He might have problems if the ULEZ is extended further.

Yes... if people are using it for nitrous oxide (N2O) they're scientific illiterates. Well, I suppose it's a NOx where x=0.5 but that'd be weird. <misses point of thread in chemical pedantry>

It just doesn't seem like a name tbh. It's the sort of thing a Ferengi might be called.

I love it! I love hearing uncommon names. If you guys like it, keep it!

Beware of people on here though, they can be right gits about names.

Beware of people on here, they don't know you in real life so can be honest about what they think of your suggested name, unlike people you will meet, who will pretend to think otherwise.

Knox is ok, bit Nox? No. (x).

Thepotdog · 16/12/2022 10:45

I’m not keen on it but if you’re going to use it I’d spell it Knox. I think it’s the name of one of Angelina Jolie’s sons.
Nox doesn’t look like a word.

Mochudubh · 16/12/2022 10:36

The Nox are also an Alien race in Stargate SG-1.

Lcb123 · 16/12/2022 10:36

It immediately makes me think of slang for laughing gas (nos / noss)… not ideal

RunDownRita · 16/12/2022 10:33

No(x).

However, if you do go for it and he turns out to be a real tough-nut and starts his own boxing academy, he could call it the School of Hard Nox. So there is that.

uncomplicatedish · 16/12/2022 10:33

I love this name when it's Knox.
I've seen it on a plaque in a cathedral as a first name.
If you use Nox then it's a Harry Potter spell to extinguish the wand light.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/12/2022 10:32

A pox on Nox

Nox has the pox

Poxy Nox

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/12/2022 10:31

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/12/2022 09:27

Get ready for Nox Nox jokes.

Boomboom

No it isn't usable. Call yourself Nox for a week and see how you like it. Behave

maddiemookins16mum · 16/12/2022 10:30

No, just no. It’s ridiculous.

longwayoff · 16/12/2022 10:30

Nox-ious. Dont. Nobody will ever thank you if you do.

Notarealmum · 16/12/2022 10:29

How about Nux (meaning nut)??

BorisJohnsonsHair · 16/12/2022 10:28

I think it's horrible sorry.

Herejustforthisone · 16/12/2022 10:27

Nitrous Oxide is known as ‘nox’ (never heard of it being called ‘noss’ as per a PP.)

Nox makes me think of kids having laughing fits and seizures from inhaling balloons and thousands of those fucking canisters everywhere, noxious gases and Amanda Knox.

None of which are particularly good associations.

Shol · 16/12/2022 10:24

25anxi · 16/12/2022 10:16

that’s the word we say to turn off all the smart lights at night 😅

Oh yeah isn’t “Nox” a spell in Harry Potter? Pretty sure it is.

itssquidstella · 16/12/2022 10:24

Knox is okay - similar vibe to other 'cowboy' names such as Wyatt, Tate etc.

Nox is a feminine noun in Latin so for that reason alone I wouldn't use it for a boy (Romance language derivations are feminine too: la nuit, la noche, la notte).

MerryChristmasToYou · 16/12/2022 10:23

As in Obnoxious?

Shol · 16/12/2022 10:19

He’ll get teased about it a lot. Why not choose a bame where he won’t be teased? If yoh call him Nox he will NOT thank you and will change it when he’s older anyway.

Weird names are ok for girls but not for boys as boys get bullied for them. The kindest thing you can do for your son is help him fit in and ‘Nox’ would be a very bad start.

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 16/12/2022 10:19

I’d think the parents were pretentious if I met a kid called Nox.

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 16/12/2022 10:18

It made me think of the Harry Potter spell. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing!

GeneratedRandomly · 16/12/2022 10:16

It sounds like a character from a game or a toy.
