I have a 10 year old Michael. Nobody shortens his name, he's always just been called his full name even by friends. It is still quite a popular name here though. He has 3 other friends called Michael in his year, none of them go by shortened versions, all of them are called the full Michael. Their surnames are also used to identify which one you are talking to. I had three of them overnight last weekend, that got confusing 😂

It’s a great name, lots of ways to personalise it if he wants to in the future. And if he ever moans about it you can tell him he is fortunate you didn’t pick up on another name currently floating around the board and call him Lucky-Boy.

My DS is 24 and is a Michael. We always called him the full Michael and accepted that he might shorten it but I don't think he has! Obviously I don't know what his colleagues call him at work but he's just always been Michael. Name shortenings aren't inevitable!

The full Michael is gorgeous - a perennial classic with a lovely sound. The problem is with the nn's for me - Mick and Mike both sound so middle aged imo due to the 70's surge in the name (and Mickey/Mikey not my cup of tea personally). If I could have guaranteed the full name or even maybe "Cal" (as in "My Cal" Grin) then it would have been a serious contender for me...

I love it. Good classic name which I think will always work. I mean yes, there were Michaels around in the 70s but it's hardly Kevin or Darren (which will probably be the names a la Ruby and Alfie by the time he's an adult).

Choose a name because you like it, not because it is or isn't popular. A name is for a lifetime.
