Could I please have your thoughts on these names for a girl?

We’re not having a middle name and the last name will be double barrelled (west African and British last names, both short).

  • Izuka
  • Medua
  • Vida
  • Zikora
  • Ibari
  • Murphy
  • Isa

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Perfectly happy in the 21st century. Just not wanting to do things that might make our children's lives any more difficult than necessary. Also pretty sure that nobody would endorse a suggestion to call a boy Chloe or Alice. It never works that way round.

You’ve made your views perfectly clear, multiple times now. And you haven’t had a single pleasant thing to say. It’s a baby baby thread, not AIBU. Please stop.

• Izuka - lovely
• Medua - objectively it's really pretty, but written down it just reminds me too much of Medusa and/or Medea
• Vida - lovely. Strong but feminine.
• Zikora - not overly keen for some reason
• Ibari - beautiful, really lovely sound. This is my favourite.
• Murphy - maybe for a middle name? Not as a girl's first name!
• Isa - My second favourite I think, now that you've explained the pronunciation

It honestly never occurred to me that people might pronounce ‘Isa’ like the financial product, so this thread has been so helpful for that! 😊

Zikora makes me think of the biblical name Zipporah.
I really like Vida, sounds strong but feminine.

I love Vida, Izuka and Isa.

What about Chioma?

RishisProudMum · 16/12/2022 12:09

All these ‘it’s a last name, not a first name’ or ‘it’s a boy’s name, not a girl’s name’ people are amusing me. You must be finding the 21st century very stressful. 🤣🤣🤣

Yes, Murphy is an Irish name. But a last name, not a girl's first name....

Thank you for your opinion, both times.

Izuka and Ibari are lovely. I think there are lots of pretty Igbo names. I like Nneka, Nnenne, Ngozi. Friends called their daughters Adaoma and Ashirima which are also pretty.

Ashirima is lovely, but are you sure you’re spelling it correctly? Igbo names are generally words or sentences and that doesn’t mean anything.

The rest are perfectly nice, standard Igbo names. One of them is the most common Igbo girl’s name and another is my middle name. 😁

Murphy is an Irish surname ... not British . Please don't call your daughter Murphy ffs

My husband is Northern Irish, so British (and considers himself British), and Murphy is a family name on his side. ‘Ffs’, indeed.

Love Vida

LulooLemon · 15/12/2022 22:22

• Izuka - nice
• Medua - not really
• Vida - yes
• Zikora - yes
• Ibari - my favourite!
• Murphy - not nice
• Isa - no, because it's a savings account

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 15/12/2022 21:22

Ibari stands out to me, I would choose that one, it sounds beautiful. I'm not keen on Murphy as a first name because I know quite a few people with Murphy as a surname. Otherwise no strong feeling for/against the rest of the list.

OkPedro · 15/12/2022 21:13

I like Vida. I don't like Murphy, I'm Irish so I can only hear it as a surname

Tripsabroad · 15/12/2022 21:12

Medua - makes me think of Medusa.
Zikora - makes me think of Zika the illness.
Murphy - I'd assume you were an American man.
Isa - I'd assume you were Muslim using the Islamic version of Jesus for your son. I think you'd also get lots of Brits saying Eye-sa due to the savings product.

Others seem fine to me.

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 15/12/2022 21:06

Izuka
Isa
Vida
Zikora
Love them.

pimlicoanna · 15/12/2022 20:46

I like Vida only

RishisProudMum · 15/12/2022 20:46

RambamThankyouMam · 15/12/2022 20:38

The only one I like is Vida. The others sound quite unpleasant.

Names aren’t ‘unpleasant’ because they aren’t names you know or are from different cultures. You can state your preference, but referring to a name from someone’s culture as ‘unpleasant’ is rather ignorant.

TempsPerdu · 15/12/2022 20:37

I really like Isaka, Isa and Vida - all beautiful names. I agree that the pronunciation of Isa is quite likely to be messed up by English speakers though.

Cherchezlaspice · 15/12/2022 20:28

Thank you very much, everyone. You’ve been lovely and super helpful!

Cinnamonandcoal · 15/12/2022 20:17

I like all of them except Murphy. Beautiful names.
People will probably say Isa wrong, and of course it's also spelt the same as the financial savings product so although it's lovely maybe not that one.
